Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning.

Moonshadow [Dark Psytrance / Goa Trance Circa 1999]

In Exile is a special mix composed by Basilisk for Global Goa Party 2, a virtual party organized by Marsh at the Goat Ranch, a flashpoint for old school Goa trance fandom. The concept is simple enough: gather up a bunch of seasoned old school veterans and have them mix up a full night of music just as if it were some point in the not-so-distant past. The first event—for which I produced Moonshadow—landed us 1999.

This time we travel back to the year 1996, smack dab in the middle of the Golden Age of Goa trance. Bill Clinton is in the White House, Boris Yeltsin is in the Kremlin, the reigning human chess champion is defeated by a computer for the first time, and tantalizing evidence of life on other worlds captures headlines around the world. I am merely 15 years old, not yet fully initiated into the world of psychedelic trance, although the groundwork is already laid by my adolescent fascination with industrial music, cyberpunk fiction, and early dial-up BBSes. One of the aims of the Global Goa Party project is to provide an experience for those of us who did not have the good fortune to attend psytrance parties back in the day—myself included! (I first heard DJ Nivoc play Goa trance in April of 1996 but had no idea what was going on at the time.) For the 2:00am to 3:30am time slot I did my best to build from a hypnotizing introduction to a seething, storming climax, taking care to end on a high note.

Blacklight Metropolis is Basilisk’s contribution to the fifth edition of Global Goa Party, a virtual event organized by Marsh at the Goatranch to simulate an entire night of music from the early years of the psychedelic trance movement. This time around the year is 1997 and the golden age of Goa trance is in full swing, blasting revellers into limitless dimensions of sound with scintillating kaleidoscopic sounds and twisted techno-shamanistic rhythms. Reprising the nocturnal explorations of Moonshadow and In Exile, this expertly mixed collection of mind-bending classics explores the darker side of the genre while journeying through the deepest part of night from 1:30 to 3:30am.

Basilisk is a veteran multi-genre DJ, co-founder of the psychedelic techno label @Techgnosis-Records alongside @benramamusic, founder of the iconic @Ektoplazm free music portal and label group (including Ektoplazm, Drumlore, and Omnitropic), lossless audio enthusiast, and dedicated archivist and electronic music curator. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Taipei, Taiwan.

Psytrance, techno, electro, house, trance, acid, breaks, bass, IDM, ambient—you name it, I probably spin it. My mixes fluidly combine different genres into harmonic journeys that defy convention.
