ESOTERIC EXPANSE is a series of ambitious and immersive cross-genre mixes exploring a vast range of styles, usually centered on a particular vibe but extending far beyond that. Each mix in this series bubbles up from silence, slowly builds into dance floor beats, and gradually comes down and returns to the void.

Esoteric Expanse: Sonic World-Building Exercises

DJ Basilisk captures the halcyon morning sound of outdoor festival season with ESOTERIC EXPANSE 2, an extended four hour mix rooted in the deeper end of progressive psytrance. Expect a playful and free-spirited blend of styles featuring several permutations of progressive house, dream trance, and dub techno, with just enough midtempo breakbeat and spaced-out ambient to provide a sublime introduction and soft landing. DJ Basilisk also delivers on the promise of harmonic mixing with smooth transitions, seamlessly layering rhythm and melody to obscure where one track ends and the next begins. Prepare to kick up some dust and bask in the warmth of the rising sun as the story unfolds!

This mix is dedicated to everyone around the world missing out on festival season throughout these pandemic years. Hopefully we'll all be together again soon! Conceived as an experiment in timelessness, this forward-thinking yet nostalgic journey into sound features 77 tracks chosen for their idiosyncratic character and analog ethos. Global cultures collide and imagined geographies collapse as the story unfolds, catapulting the listener from the mirror-shaded nightclubs of the 1980s to the shifting sands of ancient Mesopotamia and back again, with countless side quests along the way. Despite the unabashed rawness of many of these selections, Basilisk's smooth and harmonic mixing style prevails, adeptly fusing every track into a seamless whole.

Basilisk embarks on another epic mission into the outer reaches of sound with ESOTERIC EXPANSE 4, 76 tracks and nearly five hours of cutting edge techno, psytrance, electro, downtempo, and ambient. The fourth chapter of the Expanse Cycle spans a vast spectrum of contemporary electronic music styles unified by an emphasis on sleek and futuristic atmospheres, slow-burning builds, and taciturn tendencies. Despite the minimalistic focus there are also period of intense heat as the pressure rises, particularly when reaching the pumping psychedelic core of the mix. Overall the vibe is as ornate and majestic as the ringed world referenced in the title, and there's ample time to visit many of its disparate and ethereal moons.

ESOTERIC EXPANSE 5 is the fifth entry in DJ Basilisk’s Esoteric Expanse series, an ambitious series of long-form mixes dedicated to sonic world-building and cross-genre experimentation. Four hours and 70 meticulously curated selections await, opening with a hypnotic blend of ambient, downtempo, IDM, electro, and breaks before widening horizons with cosmic disco, acid house, progressive trance, and dub techno, always with a psychedelic touch. There is an earthy and organic aesthetic to many of these selections, wispy echoes of the starlit dance floors and resplendent chill domes of some counter-clock world orbiting on the far side of the sun. DJ Basilisk emerges from a long period of esoteric theorizing, conceptual regeneration, and diligent crate-digging to present Hermetic Expanse, a five-hour odyssey into hypnotic realms of underground electronic music. Originally conceived as a vehicle for showcasing the sound of Techgnosis Records (@techgnosis-records), the label he co-founded alongside Ben Rama (@benramamusic) in 2015, this mix features ten of his personal favorites from the label's burgeoning catalog. Situating the Techgnosis vibe in a wider context, this mix also features numerous selections from Digital Diamonds, Digital Structures, Horns and Hoofs Entertainment, Anarkick Records, IbogaTech, Boshke Beats, Zenon Records, and other fellow travellers of the psychedelic techno and minimal psytrance movements. The central core of the mix, a three-hour dance floor workout, was released as Techgnosis Sessions 024, but this full-length and uncut version features an additional two hours of melancholic electro, intricate and effusive IDM, experimental breakbeat techno, and dark ambient.

Basilisk is a veteran multi-genre DJ, co-founder of the psychedelic techno label @Techgnosis-Records alongside @benramamusic, founder of the iconic @Ektoplazm free music portal and label group (including Ektoplazm, Drumlore, and Omnitropic), lossless audio enthusiast, and dedicated archivist and electronic music curator. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Taipei, Taiwan.

Psytrance, techno, electro, house, trance, acid, breaks, bass, IDM, ambient—you name it, I probably spin it. My mixes fluidly combine different genres into harmonic journeys that defy convention.
