The theme is the end of quarantine, freedom, and new beginnings. This is our most important summer. We wanted to start with the tender energy of dawn out of a long dark night. The mid-set breakbeats represent breaking the chains of quarantine and isolation. Penultimately, Dubtribe's deeply ambivalent Do It Now still inspires a new beginning for us all, on its 20th anniversary. We hope this mix feels as liberating for you as it was for us to make. Perhaps, like birds at dawn.

This mischievous kitty has been a long time coming and arrives in time to kick off 2024.  Prior to the inception of the Empresarios, the group’s vocalists were integral members of the renowned DMV-based Reggaeton group, MAFU Crew.  As reggaetón and perreo go global, it's only fitting that these seasoned vocalists return to their roots and bring forth a refined fusion of experience and innovation in their newest release, "Gatita Mala." 

Gatita Mala is a love song cautioning against that irresistibly tempting person.  The track’s vocals are expertly lead by Frankie Rosado who’s laid back swagger effortlessly embraces the reggaetón rhythm. Frankie’s lyrics are full of clever innuendos and dives into realms of intimacy and indulgence, such as the flirtatious allure of getting adventurous after smoking some krippy.  Felix “El Doble” Perez comes in with the slick verse to seal the deal, complementing his vocal partner smoothly. The long-time collaborators’ voices meld seamlessly, creating a melodic masterpiece. 

In addition to the original reggaeton rendition of the track, the Empresarios also offer a Downtempo Version and a remix by Dr. Diubell.  The original's horns and piano take center stage in the Downtempo Version, as the hip-hop beats make way for a more stripped-down percussive arrangement, taking the track to afterhours territory. The final track included is for the Salseros, the Dr. Diubell Remix includes lively horns in the Salsa version of this infectious track. With the various iterations of Gatita Mala, the Empresarios once again transcend genres and bring their Tropicaliente flair to this strong single.

Been spinning a long time, 29 years, more than half my life.  Have spun nearly every genre, have vacillated between taking this very seriously and not giving a fuck.  It is more than a hobby, this is integrating an artistic conversation spanning the globe and it is my passion.  This particular conversation we’ve been having in the Deep (house/tech/breaks) arena is particularly dope, and I’m excited to be a participant by spinning & producing that which moves my ass and soul, and raises my hands to the sky.  If asked, I'll say I spin Swamp music... humid Deep House/Breaks/Tech with vivid palates. &#13;

Mixing is my zen-state.  It isn’t an intentional act as much as it is communion with sound, with the muse.  I don’t plan Sets.  My mantra is the ‘right song at the right time’, and you’re never going to answer that question until you’re in the moment.  I kicked the vinyl habit in ‘05, but I still use CDJs..  You can hear the excitement in a live-mixed set, when there’s no net, when the DJ is a sneeze away from a trainwreck.  I like a slippery beat or two, to flash your cards, to show this is real, this is Now, and we’re deep in it, together.  I also only like to mix deep, 3 mins or so.  It isn’t deep music unless you mix it deep, over your head in sounds, dancing with them as if Tai Chi, rolling them into another as if an Akido master.  The tracks dictate how they want to be mixed, the moment dictates what energy wants to emerge next; a DJ isn’t there to be intentional, we’re supposed to be receptive.  You can hear the difference.&#13;
