One of the label’s most experienced producers, Jaytech returns with the ‘Galactic EP’.

With over 40 releases across Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep, Jimbo (as we affectionately know him) is a fan favourite amongst the Anjunafamily. He honed his ear as a label A&R for Anjuna HQ in the late 2000s. Now, he’s unearthing new talent on his long-running Jaytech Music mix show and sharing his wealth of production experience on YouTube. 

The ‘Galactic EP’ features four groovy Jaytech originals, plus a remix of ‘Dreamworld’ from Paul Arcane. A long-term friend of the label, Paul dropped his Anjunabeats debut ‘Sisu’ as part of our Rising EP series in July 2021.

Genix, presents ‘199X’ (Chill Edition): a reimagining of his debut artist album, '199X', featuring chillout, ambient and drum & bass remixes from the man himself.

A love letter to rave culture, ‘199X’ is a departure from the sound that Damion Houchen, who we affectionately call Damo, is best known for. Through the late 2000s and 2010s, he caught the ear of Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk with his textured, melodic take on trance. He secured releases on both Armada and Vandit.

Genix arrived on Anjunabeats in 2010 and immediately became a mainstay in Above & Beyond’s sets with tracks like ‘Aura’, ‘Destinations’ and ‘Black Water’ (the latter written with regular touring partner Sunny Lax). From those origins, Genix has blossomed into a mainstay of the trance scene.

‘199X’ dropped on the label in September 2021. Since the album’s release, Genix has taken ‘199X’ to Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 450 celebrations at The Drumsheds London, Dreamstate, and our recent label shows in London and Miami. Tracks from the album have been supported by Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden, Darude, Joseph Capriati and more.

While making '199X’, Damo was also listening to a lot of early chillout staples. He recalls,

“During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to listen to music. I’ve always loved chillout and downtempo music, I find it great to relax and wind down to. It reminds me of laying on the beach in Ibiza, listening to FC Kahuna, Hayling, Massive Attack and some of the chill out remixes Michael Woods used to make."

Shortly after finishing '199X', he set about reworking it entirely. He swapped acid bass riffs and pounding kick drums for calmer textures and soundscapes.

"I thought it would be great to try making some different styles too, push my boundaries a little and I feel it has made me a better producer for it. Honestly, I’m really happy with how it has turned out, I think musically, it’s the best body of work I’ve ever produced.” - Genix

Genix - 303 Me (Chill Out Mix)

On Saturday, April 30th, 2022, I was honored to be on the opening roster to perform a B2B (back-to-back) set, paired up with my long-time Seattle DJ friend, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-NOTE, for none other than one of the true Godfathers of the Trance scene, legendary UK Trance artist and record producer, PAUL OAKENFOLD. Truth be known, it was Paul Oakenfold that originally sent me spiraling into the world of Trance, from which I never have emerged again, in 1998 when I first heard his album “Tranceport” at Disney World in Orlando, FL. That album blew my mind and it sent me into this mad frenzy to find more and more of this music called Trance, which led me down the rabbit hole to other artists over the next few years like Tiesto, Mirco de Govia, Ronski Speed, Kyau & Albert, NuNRG, Andy Moor, Mike Shiver, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Cosmic Gate, and eventually Above & Beyond, ANJUNA, etc, but that whole journey for me had a definitive starting point, “the Big Bang” as it were, and for me that was Paul Oakenfold… So, this show really felt like a going the full circle for me, and was just a really amazing night. It was also my good friend Eric Weber’s birthday, and he DJ’d an amazing all-classics Birthday set right after us, so it was truly a night to remember, and the club was totally packed with Trance fans and had an incredible energy to play to. Janice and I didn’t rehearse this set, we just set rough guidelines for general BPM and feel, and to try to have tracks that were easier to mix into, but what you hear on this set is what we figured out organically as we played through our 70-minute time slot. It was a total blast, and getting to “open for” and actually meet Paul Oakenfold was a definite bucket list item checked off for me. What a night!! EVERY single mix on Mark's Soundcloud was recorded live and in the moment on top-notch Pioneer DJ gear, not mixed with computer software, so they might not be exactly perfect 100% of the time, but they are "real", which is a standard of mix quality, authenticity, care, passion for live mixing, and DJ integrity Gotek is proud of. =)
