On Saturday, December 31st, I was honored to be invited to play at a NYE Trance DJ event at a club called Opaline, in Portland, Oregon. This was a special show for me for a couple of reasons, 1/ Opaline was a new club for me, which is always exciting and fun to spin at new venues, but also, 2/ this was my very first time playing in Portland since December 31st, 2019, for the NYE Bash at the Whiskey Bar, a club that I’ll always hold near and dear to my heart and which has since unfortunately closed down due to financial hardships caused by the COVID pandemic, which took the world by storm just a few months after that show.. This means that I was able to spin with some of my best DJ buddies like ZOXY and Scott Vorel (Cooltown) down there, whom I’ve missed terribly over the past several years. I was also joined by a Seattle Trance DJ and long-time buddy of mine, Serjey Andre Kul, which was a lot of fun, and the show was kicked off by a rising young DJ in Portland, Shay Baca, and she kicked off the eve with a banging Electro House set that had the crowd bouncing off the walls. We had a total blast that night bringing in the New Year, and the crowd was so much fun to play to. I was SOOOO happy the way this set turned out, and I was able to play tracks on the slower, more progressive side by so many big name artists that you usually find in the higher BPM’s of Uplifting Trance, such as Ronski Speed, Nitrous Oxide, DJ T.H., Dan Stone, and Kyau & Albert, plus some of my current FAVORITE spine tingly and brand new Progressive House tracks from the likes of Vintage & Morelli, SØNIN, Hiski, and Laura van Dam. I really tried to select tracks that might capture some feelings one might be inclined to feel on New Year’s Eve, and it was one of those nights where everything just fell together so perfectly and I wished the night would never end.. I know I’ll be listening to this set many times over the next many months, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing it. Guest set for NYE 2022 Party at Opaline Nightclub, Portland, OR, Sat, Dec 31st, 2022

On Friday, January 6th, I was honored to play my very first show of the New Year at ORA Nightclub in downtown Seattle, and this one was for a fun Trance and Progressive local Seattle DJ’s night called “Illuminate”. For this Illuminate it was an all B2B sets (B2B = “back-to-back”, 2 DJ’s playing a set together) night, and I was lucky enough to once again be paired up with one of my favorite local talents, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-Note. If you’ve listened to some of my more recent mixes you’ve probably heard Janice and I spin together before, opening for the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Oliver Smith within the past 6 months. So, I am always excited to B2B with Janice and I really love how her taste in music works so well with mine and we always have so much fun and many laughs up there behind the decks. It ended up being a great night and we had a really good turn out at the club for a “local’s night”, so it was extra fun to play to a bunch of great people whom were there to have a fun time and dance the night away. Originally this Illuminate was announced to be an "Anjuna Tribute night", but that changed towards the end, however Janice and I were already working on getting an Anjuna playlist together, so we stuck with our original plan, since we both adore the Anjuna record labels, and played a magical playlist of may of our more recent Fave Anjuna tracks, plus one massive golden oldie by Mat Zo slipped in there thanks to Janice and I really loved hearing that one again after so many years. Gotek + J-Note guest B2B Anjuna Tribute set for “Illuminate” at Ora, Seattle, WA, Fri, Jan 6th, 2023

So, I’ve hinted that this mix was coming on my Gotek FB page etc, but I’ve noticed that I’ve been gravitating to my collection of much older, “vintage”, Uplifting Trance tracks (early-to-mid 2000’s, before 2010), many of which I originally purchased on vinyl, some of which were only ever released in vinyl format, back in the day when I would hear something on DI.FM and frantically search the internet for it, when you often times would be paying $15-$30 bucks for a “white label” piece of vinyl to be shipped to you from Europe somewhere, long before the convenience of the Internet and paying $2.50 for immediate gratification to download a lossless file. Back in the days when Trance was still forming, when the tracks were 8-9 minutes long and sounded rawer and more primitive, but still some of the most spine-tingly stuff I have ever heard. Well, a couple of weekends ago I decided to record a classics mix on the CDJ's to listen to later from Dropbox (something I do once in a while for music to listen to in the backyard while I was BBQ’ing, etc). So I went to my music collection and sorted by date, and was frankly surprised how many MP3’s I had that had no date or other metadata because they were so old, so I compiled a list of tracks I hadn’t heard in many years, and this is what I ended up with. Truth be known, I did go back and repurchase many of these tracks in AIFF (lossless) format from Beatport, because some of those ancient MP3’s just didn’t have the sound quality I needed, but there still were several MP3’s used to mix this set from tracks that weren’t available to re-buy as lossless files anywhere online. This mix has been professionally sound-leveled, and preserved in the original WAV format that I recorded it in,  for that added punch of sound quality on those extra old files, but I also sort of don't mind the MP3's for the extra emphasis on that "vintage" (slightly crappy) sound quality anyway haha. For me, this mix really brought back a lot of fond memories from a couple decades ago, when Uplifting Trance was much newer and pure, still just coalescing and finding it's place, and the feelings it conjures up are pure magic. I called this one “White Label”, and plan to have a vintage Trance series of the same now. I hope you feel the same way as I do when you hear it, enjoy!! -Mark a.k.a. “White Label” a Classic Trance demo mix: 001, recorded live Feb 13th, 2023

Hey guys, well, I had SO much fun recording the first White Label Classic trance mix, and received a lot of much-appreciated positive feedback on it, that I AM BACK with another Classic Uplifting Trance mix for ya, with White Label 002!! I really dug deep on this one and used even more MP3’s than on the first one because some of this stuff is so rare it’s no longer available to purchase, and/or only released on vinyl. I did my best with sound leveling to make sure the recording volume is consistent from track to track, but some of this still stuff is just so old that it wasn’t great sound quality, hopefully it sounds okay. I had to take several tries at recording this and really had to play with the tracks and placement, but I think I got it right in the end, however I’ll let you be the judges haha. One thing I noticed is I heavily indexed on Ronski Speed on this set, but truth be told it was really Ronski’s sound that I obsessed with in the early years of building interest in Trance, and we have a lot to thank Ronski for in all of his pioneering and influence in this uplifting trance sound in the very early days, some of my very favorite stuff of all-time. Also loaded it up with some other golden oldies and rare gems and I really like the way this one turned out. Note: Mark only uses AIFF lossless quality tracks mostly purchased at Beatport.com (except for producer demos). All mixes were either recorded live in the club or directly from Mark's gear (DJM A9 Mixer, 2 Pioneer CDJ3000's) recorded on a Zoom H4n Pro in WAV format, then professionally sound leveled post-recording, Voice ID Tagged, and  converted to MP3 by Chris Dececio Studios in the UK. EVERY single mix on Mark's Soundcloud was recorded live and in the moment on top-notch Pioneer DJ gear, not mixed with computer software, so they might not be exactly perfect 100% of the time, but they are "real", which is a standard of mix quality, authenticity, care, passion for live mixing, and DJ integrity Gotek is proud of. =)
