I had the honor and pleasure of playing the main stage on Friday night at FnF's 25th annual campout. The mesmerizing light show provided an epic immersion into some of my favorite tech house and progressive tracks. I hope you all have as much fun with this as I did playing it.

Hey party people! It's almost Summer Solstice so it's the perfect time to share my poolside set from this year's Friends n' Family Summer Campout. Live at FnF Summer Campout 2023

What can I say about FnF that hasn't already been said? It's always an honor to be selected to play at these truly special events, and as such I always prepare a very thoughtfully curated set based on which stage I'm playing at and where my time slot is located in the day/night. I never plan my sets from start to finish, but I do spend quite a bit of time prior to the event finding new music and creating several small playlists of music I think I may want to play based on genre. 

This year, my slot was Friday night, June 2, 2023 from 11:15pm to 12:30am right before kem, one of my long-time DJ pals & FnF OG. For my slot, I wanted to set up kem nicely by warming up the dance floor with some tech house and then ramped up the energy throughout my set with some jackin' house & bass house.

Huge thanks to Ethan, the Music Committee, the entire FnF family and Radiant Atmospheres for always creating an exquisite experience that is truly unmatched in love, vibes and production.

Breakfast of Champions + It’s a New Day is always the best party of the year and I love the event because it’s indeed a new day and everyone is there full of optimism for a fresh start. It’s always an honor to play there and it was also my first time playing on the Mog, about a decade after dancing to DJs on the Mog inspired me to DJ! This set starts with a supporting MC, blazes through a mash-up of Drummatic Twins re-releases (thanks Nick), followed by my BOC 2023 release Shake That Thing, stops in with some Nick Thayer, bounces through my Eminight’s Doom bootleg, then settles in for an Elite Force medley (thanks Simon) that ends with playing the CDJ like an instrument. Brass Monkey gets us back on track heading towards a half time grind and shake, then resetting with a classic breakbeat, ending with my latest release, a Tears For Fears bootleg.

This week on the RIPEcast, Space Cowboys welcome back Smoove to the Bay Area.

Back in Y2K era San Francisco, there was a trend amongst the uber cool restaurants where  - as part of the dining room ambience - you would often find a DJ mixing live during dinner service. It was here, spinning vinyl all night propped up at the end of the bar, in this bastion of late 20th century California fusion cuisine I found my entrance into the fantastical wonderland that is the Bay Area DJ community. And it was here where I first encountered the Space Cowboys. 

The subsequent years featured a significant increase of the color orange into my wardrobe, Halloween undergrounds, a Unimog, breakbeats (so. Many. Breakz!) renegades in Golden Gate Park, that thing in the desert, decompression/recompression, Love parades, rhinestones, Martha, NewsBreakz, heartbreakz.  And yes, a New Year’s Day sunrise party. 

It was a glorious time to be alive 

So I think it’s fitting my first time back at BOC in *this many* years was the 25th anniversary.  I was hella psyched to be on this years line up because, if I’m being perfectly honest, I have missed you all. Spinning this set was a true joy and it was an honor to be back with the original crew.

Without doubt, DJ ICON has become an iconic figure in the U.S. dance music industry and beyond. With a career spanning 25 years, she has captivated audiences the world over with her bass-heavy cross-genre House, Breaks and Bass Music sound; magnetic stage presence, skillful DJ mixes and productions. It’s no wonder why she’s been dubbed one of the leading ladies of this domain.  

Starting in 1996 at age 16, ICON diligently rose through the ranks of the San Francisco underground at a time when female DJs and promoters were few. In just a few years, her skills and growing reputation had already landed her numerous residencies in San Francisco, as well as a steady flow of stateside and international bookings. ICON has also gained success in radio and television in addition to rocking dancefloors. Among her accolades are releases on well-known labels, features in two TV series, a spot in Shejay’s “Top 100 Female DJs”, being voted one of San Francisco’s best in the Nitevibe “Top 10 DJ Dreamteam”, scoring a coveted sponsorship from Pioneer Pro DJ and building a huge fanbase on her social media pages and Soundcloud.

ICON has toured the world performing throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia at world renowned clubs such as 1015 Folsom and Ruby Skye in San Francisco, Limelight in NYC, Fabric and Matter in London, and Avalon in LA; as well as world-class music festivals such as Coachella Music Festival, Ultra Music Festival, Burning Man and Fuel Festival in Singapore. ICON has shared stages with top tier artists such as Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Ladytron, Paul Oakenfold, Adam Freeland, Armand Van Helden, Deekline & Wizard, The Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers, Evil Nine, Elite Force, Uberzone, Bassbin Twins, DJ Icey, DJ Rap and many more. 

Aside from being busy behind the decks, ICON has also been busy behind the scenes promoting events in SF and NYC over the years. Currently she is a core member of Opulent Temple, a predominant DJ collective that is responsible for producing a large scale sound camp annually at Burning Man Arts and Music Festival, as well as year-round events that are staples in the San Francisco nightlife. 

ICON has had extensive history on the radio waves with past residencies and guest spots on respected dance music programs such as Thump Funk and Boombox Mix Sessions on SiriusXM, Liquid Todd’s Solid State on K-ROCK in NYC (Infinity Broadcasting); IBreaks and NuBreaks in London, Radio Record in Russia; and a plethora of dance music radio shows in her hometown, including House Nation on Wild 94.9 FM, Subsonic on Live 105, Zendada on Energy 92.7, and Future Breaks on KUSF. She has also made her way onto the small screen: In 2001, she was featured as one of twelve up-and-coming American DJs in “Disc Jockey,” a 12-part documentary series that aired on Showtime™. In 2004, she was the DJ on the internationally syndicated MTV™ series “The Wade Robson Project,” a dance competition hosted by the self-titled choreographer.

Lastly, ICON’s production endeavors have proven to be as exciting as her DJ career. Her releases on Illeven Eleven Records: “Welcome To My Dancefloor” with Dustin Hulton featuring Nikki Carabello and “Wha?” a collaboration with Bay Area producer Ground_Control had steller reviews and support by leading artists in the industry. “Dancefloor” charted at #8 and #22 on the Beatport Breakbeat and Electro charts with a great review in Mixmag. The KMFX remix of “Wha?” charted at #12 on the Beatport Breakbeat chart. ICON & GC have also done remixes of “Reload” for Deekline and Ed Solo feat. Million Dan on Rat Records and “Draggin” for Enough Weapons on Vibrance Recordings.

So what’s next for this powerhouse bass princess? More mixes, productions and remixes are in the works, as she continues to make her mark in the worldwide dance music industry.

Drawing on 25 years of drumming, singing and a formal jazz training, Dyson creates layers of percussive, syncopated groves and moving bass lines. His lush, melodic sound and infectious energy can be seen and heard, igniting dance floors throughout California and the Pacific Northwest.
