In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

2023 may be behind us, but #HIPHOP50 has some months still to run! In celebration of the genre’s 50th year, we’ve teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this tenth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1995, utilising only the Funk, Soul & Jazz tracks from which they were originally constructed – over 80 breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley’s iconic ‘Super Disco Brakes’ compilation series.

Kenny Dope October Weekend All 45's Mix Soul,Funk & Breaks 2012

I've sat on this mix for a few years now.  This is just a mix I made because most D^% mixes show absolutely no depth of D*# production catalog.  Most of the mixes I've heard just focus on the post 2001 (really 1999) era of D*# production with a few better known Ch*&nic joints sprinkled here and there.  Being a SoCal native, the bulk of my introduction to hip hop came through D*# production.  If you don't know every loop, every bridge, every random sound from his D*C, N*#, E#*, Mich*#, D#&thr*w days, you just don't know D*# production.  The mix was so easy to make I feel stupid positng it (which is why it's been in the vaults for a few years).  I've also chosen to keep the mix untitled to prove the point that I didn't decide to do a D*# mix as a cheap way to garner hits/listens/downloads etc...  It's just something I felt like doing because I wasn't really working on anything else at the time.  I'm currently in the final stages of what I consider to be the Mona Lisa of mixes (at least as far as my mixes are concerned).  That mix should post in a few months.  Hopefully, this mix will hold you all over until then.
