Another Essential Mix from 2003 was from another Nu Skool Breaks legend Adam Freeland. Pretty much the height of his career at this time with so many tunes under his belt from his label Marine Parade and so many bootlegs under different alias's it was a healthy time for the breaks scene and much loved by all.

This new mix showcases the sound I hear in my head when I think about a beautiful hybrid of breakbeat, techno and electro. It's also representative of the kind of Elite Force sets you'll hear from me in the live arena, as I return to the fray in 2023 after a four-year absence!

To craft a mix that had the exact feel I was looking for, I used 24 tracks in some shape or form, pulling many of them apart, rearranging them and adding liberal ly from my own extensive sample library. This set includes 11 Elite Force VIP edits, several acapellas / acidapellas and lashings of breakbeat-techno-electro love.

From the vaults!! I completely forgot about this and thought that i had lost the recording. So glad i found this mix as i feel it is one of my best from the early Phoenix years as it takes you on a journey through breaks when the whole scene was just about to explode and was one of my mixes first recorded on CD back in 1999 and recorded on basic equipment, hence some distortion. This mix includes some heavyweight bangers that rocked the breaks room every week at the Phoenix, Manchester when it was the residents who ruled the roost!

Twisted Heads - 1999

A RE:CONSTRUCTED set is a *long* way removed from a standard DJ set. Here's how it works.

Simon takes hundreds of tracks from his huge library, painstakingly deconstructs them (using Ai if needed to separate elements from the original tracks), and then pieces everything back together to create a hugely emotive and immersive musical story.

He uses Ableton Live and multiple controllers to trigger up to 16 individual channels of audio at any one time during the performance, and also performs live keyboard overdubs. The end result is a hugely addictive, compulsive and compelling blend of music that's often new, often familiar but always utterly unique.

This is storytelling on a giant canvas, and in 2024 we will be adding visuals and further live instrumentation to these RE:CONSTRUCTED sets.

Soul of Man - Y4K

After the multi-genre mash-up that was There & Back 010 I decided to get more specific for the 11th edition in 2024's crate-digging mix series; in this case to really dig into and explore DJ Zinc's brief but really awesome run of producing breakbeat garage in the early 2000's. Those of you who have been following my mixes for a while will know that I'm a huge fan of DJ Zinc - as far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best electronic music producers of all time, and since it's been 13 years since I made a tribute to him I thought it was worth pulling together another tribute mix, this time dedicated to his brief but super fruitful era of early 2000's breakbeat garage. Why? Well, not a very complicated answer: these tracks are great! Enjoy!

Funk-Fuelled Party Mayhem with Mr No Hands [July 2025]

Lots of fun was had when I DJ'ed at Big Fish Little Fish in Manchester on a Sunday afternoon in April. This was a family rave aimed at music loving parents who don't get chance to dance to tunes as much due to being parents of young children... so what better way than to bring your kids along!!

I kept my set quite familiar, funky and uplifting. Swapping from one style to the next to keep it varied, interesting and funky. It was very different to playing to a Manchester clubnight crowd and i was very nervous beforehand about what to play. However the nerves disappeared once i got into the groove. The crowd (aged 0-50) all loved it as did I and the BFLF organisers. If you're a parent with young kids then look out for a BFLF coming near to you soon!

Here is a long lost mix of mine I recently found on an old hard drive. Some classic breakbeat tunes from 2009 plus others from previous years thrown in for good measure!! 2009 was a transitional year with the breakbeat sound. A lot of the producers we knew and loved had changed their style and dubstep ruled the roost so there was not as many great breaks tunes around so you really had to dig deep to keep the breaks alive!!

Moovin Festival, Stockport, UK - 2017

The Stanton Warriors have discography about as long as my arm ! Consisting of Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley, the duo have performed internationally at festivals and parties in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Their name was taken from a manhole cover, made by Stanton Ironworks, which seemed fitting with their style of underground, cutting edge music.

The is so much to be said about this duo and their influence in electronic music today that i could go on forever....
This mix from back in March 2005 was recorded LIVE at Roxy, Prague and showcases the typical Booty Bass Breaks sound from them at that time. Enjoy !

Steve Thorpe started mixing tunes at home when he was 18 and first started DJingin Manchesters bars and clubs in 1996. Playing an eclectic mix of broken beats. In 1997, Steve joined Manchester clubnight - Tangled and turned the upstairs chillout room of a house and trance night into the longest running breakbeat night in the UK...if not the world - Tangled Breaks. Running weekly, then twice monthly and then quarterly for over 15 years and then returning 3 times a year until it ended on Tangleds 21st Birthday in 2014. Steve has warmed up and played alongside all the best breaks DJs and producers in the UK. After Tangled stopped regular events in 2008 he started his own night - Carry On which after 14 months then changed into Lowdown and Dirty... which now after 6 was voted the best breaks clubnight in Manchester and the world as it has won the 'best small event' at the Breakspoll International awards for 3 years running and Lowdown won the coveted City Life 'best clubnight in Manchester' award for 2014. Lowdown has now come to an end but Steve has been DJing at various events and festivals around the UK and helping out with other clubnights, continuing producing mixes and live streams. Steve will also be bringing Tangled back one the UK is back to normal after Covid for a special one-off party!
