Dekmantel Soundsystem Archive Series 1:

Starting with this recording, we will from time to time share live-mixes from our own Dekmantel Soundsystem, consisting of founders Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij. Operating as DJ duo, in addition to running the label, and subsequent festival series, they have been touring around the world in the past few years. Now we are opening up Pandora’s box, giving access to some recordings taken from select shows; a journey into some of their most intrepid sets.

The first in the series is a four-hour odyssey of finely-tuned, dance music craftsmanship. Recorded at Glasgow’s renowned Sub Club in December 2016, the sold-out show came at the end of the Dekmantel Soundystem ‘all-night’ tour that saw them take in 11 major cities throughout Europe and the middle east. Playing at the institutional Subculture party –first set up by residents Harri and Dom- the duo, worked up a set of disco, Brazilian music, electro, wave next to house and techno that features a fine balance of undiscovered gems, and party classics. With a gradual, progression in energy, it’s easily possible to imagine yourself letting loose on the dancefloor. 

“Within the first hour the audience was already jumping up and down, gladly fist-pumping the ceiling,” the Dekmantel duo recall proving the fine reputation of the club and it’s loyal visitors. Spoiler alert: “The sound technician forbid us to play another track after Gary Numan, as -in his opinion - it was the perfect ending to the night.”

Currently residing in Brooklyn, New York Justin Van Der Volgen has become well-known for his eclectic approach to electronic music and his musical playground 'My Rules Records', on which the artist releases most of his works. Only 'most' because Justin, of course, has placed his productions on renowned labels such as Mr. Lovefinger's ESP Institute, Golf Channel or Gerd Janson's Running Back. Furthermore, he has remixed scene heavy-weights like Todd Terje and his track 'Inspector Norse', he's sprinkled his fairy dust on Japanese New Wave group The Creams' track 'Let's' and came up with a tremendous remix for Spike's rock-ish House anthem 'Sometimes', which was hammered by Dixon and Âme. The New Yorker has also made DJ appearances in some of the most important clubs around the globe, namely in Berlin's Panorama Bar, Ata's famous 'living-room with a view' Robert Johnson or Lisbon's Lux Frágil, just to name a few. With his art:cast Justin follows his versatile, holistic and universal approach to music without sounding arbitrary but authentic rather, and guides his audience, the club-goer and headphone listener, skillfully and exquisitely through his musical world in an exceptional manner. Justin Van Der Volgen's 62 minutes and 30 second lasting journey is probably the trendiest, most timeless piece of music one will hear at the moment forever.

Concocted in lockdown this mix leans towards the slower side of club music and is rife with simmering acid, swirling synths, and a touch of tribal psychedelia.
