I was somewhat hesitant to upload this offering, since I really loved the prompt but had very limited time for musical doodling this weekend. In a fleeting moment of clarity (thanks to the prompt), I realised that the musical goal that has probably been firing my most insistent musical curiosity for a while is something along the lines of ‘sounds affecting other sounds’, however vague that formulation may seem. It was oddly comforting to be able to put this goal into words for the first time so that I could now actively pursue it in a more intentional way. I had also been wanting to set aside time to dabble in exploring how to create ‘generative textures’ of some sort. So these were the twin goals that I talked myself into making a conscious start with. Is the outcome satisfactory in its current state? Not to my ears. But in the interests of not succumbing to perfectionism, which I’ve reluctantly learned is a huge creativity-killer in the longer term, I am putting this out there anyway. 

My technical process was as follows: I took the piece I created from the Disquiet 0595 challenge and fed it through a vocoder app (Ovox) that had been gathering dust for a while within FL studio. I routed the MIDI output of the vocoder to two separate instances of the Playbox Native Instruments plugin that I recently acquired but hadn’t really got around to exploring much yet. I rolled the dice to randomise the sound output combinations and twiddled with various parameters until something emerged which began to surprise/excite my ears. I then ran out of time. Thanks as ever for reading/ listening/continuing to provide a reassuringly weird corner of the internet to where it’s possible to do this stuff.

The Assignment: Get started on a plan by getting over getting started.

Step 1: For a lot of people right now, it’s around the start of summer. For many of them, it can mean the start of one plan or another. You may very well have musical goals for the next few months. Think of one to focus on.

Step 2: Don’t wait. Record one piece of music that kick-starts whatever goal you’re working toward. Often the first step is the most difficult. Take that step.

This week’s project takes the start of summer as its theme. And if it’s the start of winter where you are, instead, I hope that it can still apply.

Step 1: Include “disquiet0597” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

spectral echoes (disquiet0619)

Time Well Bent is a piece composed for the disquiet Junto challenge, Beat Accrual.  I used Tabla software from NI to construct the simple beat heard at the beginning of the piece which evolved into a more complex arrangement thanks to two tape-loops employed to triple the beat density offset by replay times.  The harmonium/bellows were added as some gentle guitar to finish the piece.

I like it because it’s the sweet blend between demented and easy to follow.
I spent the whole day recording my upright bass, bowed, for a different project. I did 16 tracks of a repetitive thing, with rhythmic delays, so I am hot with the bow.
Here I did 8 tracks, so 4 stereo pairs (everything double tracked) and added two delays, one in 1/4th and another doing 1/8th notes.
