Mit "Kleine Schritte ins Dunkel" erhält die Welt von "Hinter uns das Land" eine neue, weise Stimme: Gisbert, der Großvater des kleinen Albrecht aus dem Roman. Es ist die Stimme eines Mannes, der ein langes Leben gelebt und die feinen Risse im Fundament der Gesellschaft schon früh erkannt hat.
