Harmonically and melodically mostly written in the last couple of months, although some themes were drafted almost a decade ago which in itself has a special meaning for me since it always lingered in my mind until I decided to finish it.
Will possibly expand upon the composition in the near future.

"Downhill" is a rock/pop anthem rooted in the frustration and heartbreak of watching a once-stable connection unravel. Inspired (surprisingly) by a fallout with my ex-landlord, the song explores shifting dynamics, emotional confusion, and the sting of unmet expectations. While it sounds like a breakup song—and is framed like one—it was actually born from a non-romantic fallout, which is part of my songwriting signature: turning everyday conflicts into grand anthems.

Produced by Jay Ives, Downhill blends gritty rock instrumentation with a polished pop structure and a soaring, catchy hook. Its dynamic build mirrors the inner turmoil of navigating miscommunication and power shifts in any kind of relationship—romantic, professional, or otherwise. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt blindsided by someone they once trusted.

modular multiple-step process on this one the most ambitious that I have done so far since 2023.  There aren't MIDI dumps or MuseScore scores of this because if i did it would be only tiny pieces of the whole thing.  It's done with random throw away lines in my text files for lyrics that didn't go into full songs so it feels like some White Album thing of half-songs or the way Alan Parsons Tales of Mystery & Imagination doesn't quite hang together because it was his first solo effort.  The samples of the contributors were paired with Roland FA-08 performances into "modules" and the ones that failed in that process for selection were replaced with Akai-MIDI keyboard performances of instruments that I got off places like Humble Bundle that are integrated with the Mixcraft 10.6 Pro Studio DAW.  And then backbones of performances which connect the sample section modules complete the process when overlaid with vocals corresponding to all (or almost all) the modules.  This went twelve draft versions, I've never done that many incremental drafts.

**"Waiting on the World to Change" is the first single released from John Mayer's 2006 studio album, Continuum. The song enjoyed commercial success as a single and won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 49th Grammy Awards. Because of its theme of discontent and hope, it quickly came into demand in a variety of television programs, charity benefits, and other events.

"Waiting on the World to Change" contains a highly popular chord progression often found in blues, rock and soul songs. The chord progression is I - vi - IV - I - V - vi - IV - I, and in the case of "Waiting on the World to Change", it is in the key of D. Another interesting fact is the accenting of the beats in the verses. Contrary to most popular music, the second snare backbeat of the second measure of the two-bar beat that repeats through most of the song features an accent on the "and" of "4", and not directly on "4".

The song's theme centers on the singer and his generation's inaction in regard to current world conditions. However, he attributes this inaction to a lack of power:

Now we see everything that's going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it

He also laments the corruption among leaders:

It's not that we don't care,
We just know that the fight ain't fair

John Mayer confirmed this feeling of discontent between the leaders and that led to an interview with The Advocate, explaining the song this way: "It's saying, ‘Well, I'll just watch American Idol because I know that if I were engaged in changing anything for the better, or the better as I see it, it would go unnoticed or be completely ineffective.' A lot of people have that feeling."[1]

 Even so, the song alludes to hope for the future, with the singer intoning that with his generation's ascension to power, things will change:

One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

Politics was a topic that Mayer had not previously tackled. On his decision to include a politically tinged song, he commented, "You cannot avoid war in life, you cannot avoid the fear of terrorism, you cannot avoid those things now, they are a part of everyday demeanor. So in that sense it's become more of an acceptable thing to comment on because it's just so much of a white elephant."[2]
