In the summer of 2021, painter, photographer, and musician John Clarke went to a house party in rural western New England and heard something special: the keyboards, drums, and bass of the party band playing with John’s longtime friend and train-hopping partner, the talented electric guitarist John Roberts.

John Clarke took it as an opportunity to form the new rock band that he’d been contemplating—one with multiple songwriters who could explode song seeds into versions that might otherwise be missed by one artist working alone. To spice up the sound, John called in vocalist Erika Nelson, who had sat in with him during a performance years earlier.

This is how The Best Times were born.

The band entered a fertile period of songwriting and gigging, and people took notice, including troubadour rocker Johnny Irion, who offered to record their debut EP, which quickly expanded into an LP project: their new album, Revel.

The Best Times serve up cinematic, affecting songs driven by John Roberts’ powerful electric guitar, Keith Berthiaume’s soulful piano and organ, tight vocal harmonies from John Clarke and Erika Nelson, and the rhythmic backbone laid down by drummer Mike McKenna and bassist Dan Krhla.

The band has developed a mantra of sorts: “This life ain’t no dress rehearsal. The Best Times are now.”

I have a mind and soul that uses music as an extension to express itself.  I'll find the right keys or chords or just catch a vibe and things happen. I mix it down into a sonic symphony for my ear drums and a visceral voyage for the soul. It might not sound like what's on the radio or anything like your favorite band but I'm not trying to. I simply do what It is I can do best. I do me. Simple. Authentic. Raw. 

My sound is a mix of rock and electronic elements. I've been influenced by many types of music and you'll hear it all blend together nicely if I'm hitting my mark proper. My production methods are a mix of Ableton, my guitar, my midi keyboard, and my mind. Basic, but enough to do some damage.

I am in the process of writing my fifth album which I hope to record at some stage during the year..

Musical influences for me have been many and varied including for example Bert Jansch, John Martyn, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Mark Knopfler, BB King, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, Paul Simon,  JJ Cale, Eric Clapton, Colin Hay and John Mayer.

First of all thanks for dropping in on my page.
I sing, write songs and play rhythm guitar. I'm trying to learn a bit of bass. People tell me I've got a reasonable voice and I have a liking for melody. As I make my way with multi-track home recording, I'm hoping the the end result will be greater than the sum of the parts!
