Imagineering Radio EP01 - Nightmares on Wax

I made this mix after my interview and conversation with Ralph Moore for Mixmag, and it's inspired by lots of the music and references we were discussing. I wanted to do a mix for Mixmag you wouldn’t usually get going through soul, funk, reggae, disco, R&B and house. All the songs are tunes I’ve been digging this past year during the pandemic. I had a lot of fun digging records for this mix and recorded it live in my studio The Other Ship in Ibiza.

In Session: High Contrast

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's classic LP 'Mecca and the Soul Brother' turned 30 recently, so reminisce for a spell with a mix of OG Samples, Remixes, & Blends.
The way Pete sampled old jazz/funk/soul records and layered them over hard, dusty drums was masterful (how he caught that little part on the fadeout of an Ohio Players record for 'Lots Of Lovin' still amazes me).    
Combine that with C.L.'s sharp yet fluid lyricism (how many MC's could rhyme like THIS back in '92??), and you unquestionably have one of the pillars of early 90's NYC boom bap.

Everything about this album is a MASTERPIECE....from the abstract cover art, to the jazz-infused production emphasizing the LOW END, to the rhymes traded effortlessly between Q-Tip and Phife (R.I.P.).  Genius-level artistry.
This album represented a defining moment in hip hop, so I HAD to pay tribute with a mix incorporating the original samples, remixes, and blends.

Voracious desire: @mixtresss' frenetic sets are creating a new generation of rave lovers

Mixtress: "The idea behind this mix was to emulate my night out — starting off with bass-y and breaks-y rave music but getting quite intimate and soulful in the end, like we do when we go back to the afters with far less people and much worse conversation. I’ve gone from bassweight-y dubstep to some classic hardcore, contemporary breaks and then into some more meditative drum n bass. Trying to emulate the genre- I think hardcore is more about an energy and of love for everyone and the dancefloor to me, than a certain set of years or bpms or amens. I also like to mix the older more euphoric sounding breaks with more contemporary tracks so I’ve got an Intense tune from ‘93 mixed into some Brazen records. I think some of the older 93 tracks I’ve picked transport you into this dreamlike state, because it was made pre having the luxury and constraints of the internet and accessibility to DAW’s so it’s a bit alien sounding. I wanted to feature music that I listen to at home that’s a bit weird and cross genre - there are a few leftfield IDM backpain-relieving sound design dreamboats, all with a warm jazzy hug.

I ended with quite deep and more soulful dnb cuts. I love them all, if not more now - things like Calibre Sunrise, or Gusts from a very, very important label, North Quarter (big ups Amsterdam), and Vanguard from Alix Perez. Bit of a challenging one to get everything I wanted in this hour but hopefully it’s got just enough nostalgia for my millennials and gen z’ers to smile alike."

Cassette Culture with Stretch Armstrong: The Latin Rascals, Dec. 1985, Kiss-FM NYC

This is the very last episode of my show on my local college radio station....CJSW 90.9FM....I've been doing this show..in and out...for 5 decades...And over the years it moved through Tuesday Sunday and Thursday before being moved to Friday evening in 1993 to helm a night of groove that started at 6pm and ended well into the early hours of Saturday. That Friday became the envy of many a station in North America and still continues to this day. I lasted just short of 20 years, when I left for a long weekend and returned in 2017 to do a drive home show on Monday from 4 to 6. Unlike the Friday show, this particular incarnation of the Musiquarium was flawed....mainly because of the 35% Canadian Content regulations...it just sounded like two different shows. So feeling that I could take it no further...and with commitments that far outweighed the show...I thought I would end it at the end of March 2020 with a show that was what I really envisioned the Musiquarium to be all along....just an eclectic mash of sounds and styles that stimulate and confound in equal measure. Thanks to all for all the love over the years.
