The 76th vurt podcast features a 113-minute live set from Artefakt, the live techno duo from the Netherlands. 
This set by Artefakt was recorded live at Spread in Tokyo, on the 2nd of June 2023. This night was part of the Field Records ‘Floating World’ label tour celebrating their 15 year anniversary. The Tokyo events were co-organised by the Liminal Dreams collective.

세계적으로 잘 알려진 네덜란드의 라이브 테크노 듀오 Artefakt는 닉 라피엔(Nick Lapien)과 로빈 쿡(Robin Koek)의 최면적이고 주술적인 음악에 대한 공통된 애정을 기반으로 시작되었다. 듀오는 폭넓은 프레임-워크(frame-work)를 통해 음악이 연주되는 동안 소리의 질감과 톤을 미세하게 변화시켜 인간의 뇌가 몰입하고 호흡할 수 있는 최적의 분위기를 조성한다. 최근에는 즉흥적인 방식을 기반으로 정교하게 큐레이팅된 콜라보레이션 시리즈 De Stijl를 선보이며 창작의 경계를 확장하고 있다. Artefakt는 유럽, 북미, 아시아 전역에서 라이브 공연을 펼쳐왔으며, 아날로그 감성이 짙은 이들의 무대는 아름다운 선율과 깊은 감성의 테크노를 좋아하는 팬이라면 절대로 놓쳐서는 안될 최고의 공연이다.

At the root of Nick Lapien and Robin Koek’s Artefakt project is a shared love for melancholic, hypnotic voodoo music. Their sound is pensive with deep, rich textures; long track lengths—often six-minutes-plus—give the duo an expansive framework in which to make small changes of texture and tone, creating cerebral, balanced atmospheres that absorb and engage. “Sometimes we just take a short element, like the sound of a falling drop of water, and from this recording we extract the rhythm and use it as a starting point,” they say. “It’s a very organic way of creating new material.” 
After a period of self-reflection, the Dutch duo returned in 2019 to launch a label with a new EP. De Stijl serves as a platform for their musical explorations and those of their close friends. The imprint’s inaugural EP,  Far and Wide, a lesson in dancefloor-ready techno that prioritises mood and melancholy, preceded Monsoon, Artefakt’s second album, this time on Svreca’s mighty Semantica Records. Across eight tracks, the duo evidenced an intrinsic understanding of rhythmic structures, confirming their status as one of the most singular and emotionally evocative acts in contemporary techno. 
As a live act, Lapien and Koek have performed all across Europe, North America, and Asia, their analog-heavy set a must-see for fans of melodic and deeply emotive techno. Drawing on their shared love for collecting records, they also perform as DJs, crafting long, hypnotic narratives laced with exclusive material and records from the expensive collections, old and new. 
Having first crosses paths at university, Lapien and Koek began making music together in 2012. Lapien, whose infectious, swinging house cuts have featured on Rekids, Soul People Music, and DVS1’s Mistress, was just beginning his career as a solo artist; while Koek, who designs his own artistic systems and teaches at dBs Music Berlin, had just earned a Master of Arts from Utrecht's School of Arts, specializing in Sound Design and Composition. After releasing two EPs on the legendary Dutch imprint Delsin Records, in 2017 Koek and Lapien presented their debut album, Kinship, cementing their nuanced, atmospheric style while showcasing its breadth. It was the first big step in their ongoing pursuit to adopt techno as an art-form rather than a genre.

In a little over a decade, Separat has proved his mettle behind decks in his hometown Aachen, current base Cologne and other places like Gewölbe, Tresor or Openground. His sound has been instrumental in the local scene, a true underground talent and one of the heads behind Brandwerk. His press presence is fairly light, and a keen focus on his sound the most critical part of his work: groovy, immersive and playful. Fun through and through, with tones and charging rhythms which are designed for dancing the night away. Night. The entrance to the Tavda Caves is veiled in smoke from campfires and stars reflected on stone. Here, for centuries, the shamans of Altai performed their rituals — beating drums, summoning the spirits of rivers and mountains. The stone halls became temples, where the echo repeated every word, turning it into an incantation. The Tavda Caves are one of the legendary places of Altai — hollow mountains that still carry the resonance of ancient voices. Hunters and shamans once lived here, nomads found shelter in the darkness, and now those who seek the earth’s energy come to listen. The stone keeps the breath of thousands of years, and if you stay still, you can hear the music of darkness and the echo of light.

This fifth chapter of Mountain Altai VA sounds like an ancient ritual, where each track is a separate spell.

VRIL is one of the most reliable artists in techno. He emerged with a style that was his own and has pretty much stuck to it ever since. Eight years after his debut, that loopy, dubby take on the genre sounds as vital as ever, and most often comes on labels like Delsin, Dystopian and Giegling. A live set from the German is just as floor facing and effective. It will veer from deeper moments of intensity to trippy, off kilter drum patterns that are designed to keep you moving. 

Here he serves up a perfectly mix that syncs perfectly with the changing season: it’s all warm and cuddly from the off, with cosy dub techno cocooning you in an inviting sound world that slowly transitions into more twisted and straight up techno. Whether the drums are thumping or laying more horizontal, there is an absorbing intensity to VRIL's work that proves he is someone who has a real mastery of his art.
