Having spent the first half of 2013 working on two site-specific installations; UnThread in Southend, and After the Flood as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, Isnaj Dui (aka Katie English) presents the follow up to 2012’s ambitious year-long Duodecim project.  Euplexia, Isnaj Dui’s most recent studio album, sees a return to the raw, edgy sound prevalent in earlier works, yet combines this with the maturity of composition which English has refined over the years.

With Euplexia, Isnaj Dui has drawn on aspects of her installation work and the journal-like nature of Duodecim to combine field recording and sampling alongside her trademark concert and bass flutes and dulcimer.  Using coil pickups, dictaphones and other electronics to build unstable textures and throbbing basslines, English has created a soundscape that is at once serene and grating.  Whilst the trademark schizophrenic nature of tracks is in check, this album also sees a move towards more dissonant harmonic structures and high frequency playing on the flutes.  The CD comes packaged in a hand-printed sleeve.

Following the release of his debut record “A Louder Silence” last October on Late Night Lates, Leifur James returns with his new single ‘Wurlitzer’ ahead of a run of dates including a headline show at The Southbank Centre in late March.

Leifur’s debut fused ambient electronica, jazz, classical and soul music, a recording process which was over a 2 year period. ‘Wurlitzer’ is the first piece of music he reveals from a new creative period after those sessions.

“’Wurlitzer’ was kind of a break away from the ambience of the album.” says Leifur. “I was wanting to corrupt the mood of the album with something a bit intense and destructive. I guess there was an unusual balance there for creating something new but in a bit of a destructive mind-set.” 

“I’d been staying at my dad’s in the winter months, he lives in the middle of a rural pre historic stone circle, its quite an intense place in winter. I was playing on the old upright wurlitzer piano there and the wind was shaking the house, I could hear it aggressively whistling in the chimney. The contrast of the wind with the piano was interesting and gave me the idea.” 

The video was created by animator/director Balázs Simon. “We spoke about the video and this balance of creation and destruction in the music. The theme for the video being the duality of creation; creation and destruction and the cross over point between those.” The result is ravishing 4 minutes of piano-fused electronica haunted by ecological currents.

Should we hold on to certainties from the past? Or should we open up to new and unknown possibilities?
I believe my music reflects this dilemma. Sometimes chaotic, sometimes meditative. Sometimes refreshing and sometimes depressing.
But always open for unexpected surprises

Organismic mixes with Lenco L75 turntables (stepless range 16-78 rpm!) and electronic/electroaccoustic instruments with all kinds of sound sources.
All tracks are 1-track improvisations and cannot be repeated
