Snow Ghosts is the collaboration between Throwing Snow, aka Ross Tones, and vocalist Augustus Ghost, aka Hannah Cartwright.  In 2013, they released their critically acclaimed debut full-length LP ‘A Small Murmuration’ on Houndstooth, and were named The Guardian’s ‘New Band of the Day’, Zane Lowe’s ‘Next Hype’, and have played a live acoustic session on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 show.

‘Secret Garden’, the third single from the album, is an atmospheric, melancholic production that perfectly melds Ross’ love of chaos theory and Hannah’s earthy propensity for nature. Iconoclastic producer Matthew Herbert provides his delicately off-kilter 'Wash It All Away Remix', while avant-garde producer Richard Skelton offers up an unforgettable ambient drone re-work. 

Black Acre's Blue Daisy features on the album version of 'Covenant', and he returns here with Hey!Zeus under the Dahlia Black collective to round out the EP with a raw, horror-core influenced hip-hop remix.

With most DJ’s barely getting their teeth in to 2014 yet, Rotterdam based composer and producer Eelke Kleijn is already back teasing more huge tracks. Set for release on Feb. 24 on Eskimo Recordings are two brand new originals. ‘Lovely Sweet Divine’ is a slice of space disco heaven. This otherworldly tune is drenched in expansive reverb, disco rhythms and infectious arpeggiated basslines.

Typically brooding with an uplifting inflection, 'A Tale Of Two Lovers' is Eelke at the top of his game – only what we have come to expect from recent months. Combining fluid violins, hang drums and his typical bass rumble it’s a track from someone so adept at production they have the confidence and freedom to play around with styles in the 7-minute runtime.

In these fastmoving times, where many acts come and go in the space of a few blog posts, it's becoming harder and harder to find artists with true staying power. Anu Pillai aka Freeform Five is one of those rare artists. Following an impressive series of originals & remixes and productions for artists like Ladyhawke, Santigold, Lana Del Rey and Little Boots, he returned to the scene with ‘Weltareh’, a collaboration with Gambian griot and master musician Juldeh Camara. On ‘Leviathan’ Freeform Five teams up with the legendary Róisín Murphy for an exercise in irresistible vocal power and anthemic, feel good appeal. Tom Trago delivers an incarnation of ‘Leviathan’ that highlights the shimmering synths and melodies and puts the funk edge and drum beats centre stage. Cage & Aviary provide a slice of dirty electro tech in their remix teeming with solid claps and bleeps and FX.

One of the youngest DJs on the Belgian DJ circuit, Maxime Firket aka Compuphonic soon moved onto the international scene with a release on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings. Further releases came on other highly acclaimed labels including Get Physical, Modular, Darkroom Dubs, Systematic Recordings, 2020 Vision and Parquet Recordings. On his ‘Leviathan’ remix, Compuphonic injects a playful bounce into the soaring sonics of the original melody.

South London based Cage & Aviary provide a slice of dirty electro tech in their remix teeming with solid claps and bleeps and FX. The duo started off with releases on the much acclaimed Dissident Distribution and have since appeared on DFA, Tiny Sticks, Astro Lab and Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label. They also run their own label The Walls Have Ears. 

Tom Trago delivers two incarnations of ‘Leviathan’ firstly a dub version that highlights the shimmering synths and melodies and puts the funk edge and drum beats centre stage. His remix closing the package reintroduces Róisín’s unforgettable voice. Tom Trago is one of the Netherland’s finest producers and is the most prominent artist on Amsterdam institution Rush Hour Recordings, his third album came out on the label October last year and he also curates the offshoot label series Voyage Direct.

Blende kicks things off with the EP’s title track, a throbbing neon-disco theme sustained by hammering piano chords. Imagine driving around Miami circa 1986 in a white Lamborghini, Hill Street Blues theme on the car stereo, with Ricardo Tubbs as your chauffeur (and you’ll be pretty close).

Sparkle is an organic arpeggio boogie that recreates the sound of early 2000's New York with a ‘14 attitude.

Plush is most manifestly reminiscent of the 80ies with its synthesized guitars and pianos and its slomo pulse, swamped in a dim soundscape.

Belfast-based four-piece Girls Names are a singular proposition, both geographically and psychically removed from their contemporaries at home and abroad. Released on 18th February, their second album The New Life is the sound of a band on the fringes striving to forge their own path, purposefully out of step - and time - with their surroundings. Weighed heavy with the grey landscapes of their hometown, The New Life is isolation laid bare, shot through with an undeterred sense of purpose and individuality.

The band’s performance at Primavera festival 2012 provided them with their first real opportunity to showcase the songs that were to comprise The New Life. The sunshine backdrop of the Spanish coastline offered a somewhat incongruous setting to the eerie dissonance of the new material, a kind of trial by fire metamorphosis rapturously received. Following a tour of Europe, the band returned home to record the album over a series of months. Having been produced by singer and songwriter, Cathal Cully, they’ve managed to capture that sense of otherness the performances at Primavera hinted at. The expansion to a four piece means the garage-clatter of the spritely pop songs of their debut have been replaced by a deeper, shadowy exercise in catharsis, driven by repetition, psychedelia and Dionysian crisis. And the record was born of a weighty concept too, as Cully explains:

“The New Life is not an over night change for Girls Names - just over two years in fact. Dead to Me literally was dead to us by the time it was committed to wax. But it's a learning curve. We started moving on as artists the moment we finished that recording session, maybe even before. Not to dwell on the past, The New Life is what happens when you reset everything back to zero and start again, but try to perfect. It starts back at zero the minute the needle hits the groove but we're also starting back from zero once the needle lifts at the end of the record. Ad infinitum. The New Life is what follows now.”

The album’s title track, and the first single to be taken from the album, is an ideal entry point. Just shy of 8 minutes long, it rotates around a hypnotic bass line, and in Cully’s evocation of renaissance, offers a perfect metaphor for the album as a whole. New single ‘Hypnotic Regression’ - available to stream here - reflects another side to the record. The reverb-heavy guitars and compelling melody are immediately memorable, but there are signs of experimentation, too; the white squall of the lead break; the uneasiness in the vocal echoes that furnish the verses. As such, The New Life, stands as a brave statement; the mark of the band untying themselves from the past and easing forth into the unknown.

The New Life will be released on February 18th on Tough Love (UK) and Slumberland (US).

Following an impressive series of original productions & remixes and a relentless touring schedule, Anu decided to take a break from Freeform Five a few years back to concentrate on writing, producing & remixing for the likes of Ladyhawke, Santigold, Lana Del Rey, Little Boots and Roisin Murphy amongst others.

Anu has always thought outside the box. His remix of Isolee's Beau Mot Plage redefined the art of remixing, juxtaposing the micro-synthesis of the original with intricate Afro & Latin polyrhythms, creating a bonafide house music classic. Now Anu has come full circle, collaborating with Gambian griot and master musician Juldeh Camara (a member of Robert Plant's Sensational Space Shifters band) for his latest release Weltareh on the legendary Eskimo recordings. As a multi instrumentalist, composer, DJ  and producer, Anu can skillfully meld the organic musicianship of Juldeh's Fulanese riti (a one string violin) and kologo with his own studied electronic experimentation and guitar playing – as one listen to this truly epic track will attest.

Prins Thomas joins the the stellar list of super talented artists who've been invited to remix Freeform Five tracks (following on from Tiefschwarz, Radioslave, Lindstrom, Mylo, M.A.N.D.Y, Ewan Pearson, Jackson & His Computer Band and Maurice Fulton to name a few) along with a stunning re-work from Anu himself alongside Glasgow Underground's Kevin Mckay.

"Hold Dis" Keeps the quirky impossible-not-to-dance-to jacking beats flowing and adds up a delightful synth work to really take us on a journey. 

Last up is "What You've Done", with a soulful vocal arrangements and massive buildups setting the mood for those powerful bassdrops. A hit to be for sure.
