Hospital Records proudly present the second instalment of their fresh ‘Ultrasounds’ release series which shines a spotlight on some of the most exciting artists outside of the NHS roster. Talented MC and vocalist Slay continues the series, and being no stranger to releasing on the south London drum & bass imprint since his recent link up with Whiney on ‘Back In Action’ from Lens’ ‘Hospital Mixtape’, the Manchester-born wordsmith has been championed as one the best new voices in the underground and has recently been stepping up to become a familiar voice in drum and bass. Electrifying the 174BPM circuit over the last few years through dropping gems on V Recordings, Critical and The North Quarter, he’s now making his mark on Hospital with four fresh cuts as part of his ‘Ultrasounds Vol. 2’ EP which fully drops on Friday 15th July.

‘Vibing On My Own’ is set to be the sound of summer. Slay delivers retrospective lyricism about spending alone time in the music and getting “lost up in the drums and the bass”. Slay’s rhymes align perfectly with Sl8r’s production as the fellow Mancunian provides a vibey roller layered with crisp percussion and slick piano chords.

Rough and rugged breakbeats and lethal bass injections from Chimpo & Sl8r set the tone for Slay’s colossal punchlines and unmatched raw energy, with the Manchester crew out in full force on the first EP single ‘Dis One’. An undeniable dancefloor shredder, once again this top trio provides the magic after previously linking up on the phenomenal old-school roller ‘Falling’ released on V Recordings. 

A dreamlike drum & bass trio, Slay teams up with A Little Sound and Lenzman on ‘Taste Of Gold’. Switching up his flow the Mancunian MC supplies calming atmospherics with laidback verses. Lenzman crafts up his signature soulful D&B production opening the track with soul drenched piano chords and luscious drum work. The North Quarter label head continues to supply the sweetest of liquid cuts. Expect enchanting vocals and melodies courtesy of A Little Sound who has been rapidly rising the ranks in the scene since dropping releases on Born On Road and Elevate Records. 

Final track ‘Badman MC’ sees Slay step into eerier soundscapes as he tells the story of how he entered the realms of being an artist. He’s joined by Chimpo once again who chimes in on production duties taking you on a journey through the tale of his jungle influences. Listen in as these two manifest their effortless ability at being some of the the most untestable MCs.

Toulouse's master craftsman Redeyes delivers his fourth album “Selfportraits” on Amsterdam imprint The North Quarter. Known for his deeply detailed, emotive take on Drum & Bass, the French pioneer has a career spanning over 15 years. After three previous projects on The North Quarter – including 2018's opus “Broken Soul” - he now returns with the profound “Selfportraits”. Written almost exclusively during the Covid-19 crisis, this album captures a time spent in sheltered reflection. Drawing on both musical influences and personal beliefs this album is both deeply personal and touches on important issues of our times. 

“The album was made during the lockdown and it all came together quickly. I was just spending time at home with my kids, splitting time between making music and home-schooling. It was just a time where I felt sheltered and comfortable with the music just flowing naturally,” Redeyes explains. “My music is not just dance music. I've always seen my art as something that transcends the dance-floor, and all the greatest artists in the world - from painters to singers to actors - have always been engaged in important fights. So why don't we do it, why are we not as engaged as our favourite artists from other genres are? Its time to make the difference, its time to be the change. This album is musically what reflects the core of my Drum & Bass sound. But this album is not just my own self-portrait - it's also the one of the guests. They speak the truth from their hearts out loud.” 

This album is a journey through vintage soulful Drum & Bass, soundscapes and beats and sees Redeyes at his most inspired. Through ten carefully pieced together tracks, the listener is transported through a mosaic of influences and emotions. With featured artists such as [ K S R ], Lovescene, Juga-Naut, DRS and DJ Flight, an important narrative is added to the warm and serene instrumentation. Redeyes continues to uplift and inspire: a soft spoken, gentle soul with a clear vision of music.
