Le projet autour de An die Nacht a été déterminé par la figure de Schumann qui domine le programme de ce concert. Le choix du texte extrait des Hymnes à la Nuit de Novalis (1772-1801) —il s’agit du deuxième poème du cycle — s’est progressivement imposé à moi car, d’une part la personnalité —et la courte vie— de Novalis rappelle celle du musicien, mais surtout parce que ce cycle dédié à la Nuit —l’une des rares œuvres achevées de Novalis— me semble faire parfaitement écho à la musique orchestrale de Schumann qui, poétiquement, paraît très différente de son œuvre pour piano et de sa musique vocale. Ces œuvres symphoniques, ces « architectures de pénombre » comme les nomme André Boucourechliev —Manfred en est l’expression la plus claire, à mon sens—, résonnent de manière tragique, ambiguë et renvoient souvent à un monde crépusculaire.

All About Quincy

Elissa is a monodrama for soprano and string quartet, which retells the Dido and Aeneas story from Vergil's Aeneid in a musical "stream of consciousness." The audience experiences events as Dido does, following the unique twists and turns of her conscious and subconscious mind. The conscious internal monologue is presented by the soprano, who sings text adapted from fragments of the original Latin Aeneid. And on the other hand, the quartet presents music whose sensations mimic those of Dido's subconscious, emotional progression. The work follows Dido as she meets Aeneas, falls in love with him, is betrayed by him, and comes to despise him. Elissa presents one particular view into the archetypal story of a relationship coming together and falling apart.
