This was the Pharcyde's first gig in the UK and just as dope live as as on record. If you were there too and know the exact date please drop a line!
The group, along with producer J-Swift, recorded their first album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, then was later certified Gold by the RIAA in 1996.The album was highly acclaimed, and became one of the most praised and influential alternative hip hop albums of the 1990s.
While all of the Pharcyde sing as well as rap, their greatest asset has to be the voice of Romye, stage name Booty Brown. It's a high and reedy sound with a hysterical edge, giving the perfect start to the single 'Passing Me By', in which the group detail their unrequited loves (Independent edit). One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. This is a project that I was asked to do I guess sometime in the early 2000's . It was a remix for a Bob James project . the idea was to take an existing piece of work and flip it . So this was my flip . I had Pete Miser come in and do some vocal snippets . I never knew what happened to the project but I did put a lot of work into this mix so I figured I would share it .
