Stefan Schwander aka Harmonious Thelonious is definitely not a newcomer. He has been around for a long time and has already released lots of amazingly varied music on labels such as Emotional Response, Italic, Meakusma and Diskant. He’s also an integral part of the infamous Duesseldorf / Salon Des Amateurs axis that is an obvious hotbed of talent. He describes his style as "American minimalism vs. African drumming vs. European sequencing", a heady mixture which is clearly evident on this EP though with a definite Middle Eastern twist. At Versatile HQ they were introduced to this clutch of tracks by one of the members of Acid Arab and were totally blown away. Stefan has a very unique production style, fusing all of the above elements with a hint of Gamelan, a dash of tweaked FM synthesis type sounds with a dose of warm ambience and finally his own singular touch on the mix. Here premiered is the b1 "Defender", our fave cut of this delightful four tracker. revisiting some of the A-side sound palette, but catapulting those cosmic tones into a realm of amphetamine fuelled intensity - peaktime drummy psychedelia for any and all dance floors. Berlin based Dame Bonnet makes music influenced by post punk and cold wave and with a primitive and reverb-drenched production he creates a tragic dream for the listener to sink in to. The music has a sentimental feel to it but the pretentions are avoided thanks to the direct sound and the unremitting drums which contributes to give the tracks a forward momentum instead of a stuck in place-feeling.

Dame Bonnet makes sad club music with traces from the early eighties In England, a society ravaged by the cold individualism as a result to neo conservative politics - a time that resembles ours, where people gets categorized out of prejudice and the social welfare systems are uninstalled bit by bit in front of a sparser crowd of woke people. In Europe, now in the 2020s, a supposed dead ultraconservative monster is coming alive again and Dame Bonnets music makes the soundtrack to that process.

This release, Dame Bonnets first on Höga Nord Rekords, captures, though the songs are all instrumental, an unpleasant atmosphere in our time. The music has its roots in 1980s England but it fits perfect also for the cold present of 2020.

@Spatial-Awareness follows up his previous warmly-received release "Reveal Yourself" with "Snakeoil", a hypnotically insistent dancefloor groove that blurs the edges of acid house and techno, and named as a wry aside to certain less-than-trustworthy players on the world stage.

With Spatial Awareness having remixed debut release "Telephobia" last year (on Pete Dorling's Interzone Music Club label), rising enigma @RosaKlebb kindly returns the favour, peppering "Snakeoil" with some exhilarating left-of-centre techno magic.

Sonido Moderna is a multi-disciplinary collective founded in 2016. Their initial goal was the dissemination and exposure of what they like to call “Designer Dance Music”. Taking pride in swimming upriver and the limits this ethos presented, they managed to slowly introduce alternative dance music and sounds unheard of in Guatemala's limited electronic music scene. They could think of no better way to commemorate the founding of Sonido Moderna and the cross-cultural exchanges achieved than announcing their new label. In November 2020, an often-talked about dream will come true: The release of a compilation of all-original tracks that represent their mission, aesthetic philosophy, and contrarian efforts. 

The first of many, this VA release is devoted to showcasing not only local Guatemalan producers but also artists from their globe-spanning group of friends and collaborators. Producers from Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico and Colombia that share their musical worldview and have been great inspirations as well as partners in this corner of dance music counter-culture will be rounding off the compilation: Alan Es, Alf Champion, Dany F, Hanzo & Yaman, ID_UA, Mijo & Max Jones, Mike Rowave, Mverto Futura, Tony Gallardo II and, of course, Guatemala President Fabio Me Llaman Soltero were the ones chosen to bring N.001 to life.

Oh boy, it was hard to choose one! The high quality of the tracks turned the mission into a tough one. In order to help us decide, we used two criteria: First, the featured artist had to be Guatemalan; second, he had to be someone who hasn’t previously appeared on our platform. The silly method worked and brought us Mverto Futura’s contribution to the compilation: “Cursed Dumbeck” combines a groovy industrial-influenced percussive line, a playful synth layer, and a beautiful chorus-like pad. Amamos el resultado! Mverto Futura is definitely another virtuous Central American talent to watch, peeps!
