White Magic EP [Ulla Records]

The always interesting Mexican label NUFF MUSIC finally starts its 2022 season! For the 12th EP of the acclaimed imprint, Madrid-based artists Rams & Ivan De La Rouch (FREEDL022/032) teamed up again – the lads have already had previous collaborations released on Espacio Cielo and Golden Soul Records. This time, they bring to life “Diskobrute”, a mighty and cosmic Indie Dance-inclined single featuring fat remixes by Azaria (SXDNS076 as Dirt Track, a duo formed along with Javier Busto) and Disco Mortale, the new alter ego of Daniel Monaco (SXDNS137/FREEDL006). Premiered here, the latter’s contribution, by the way.

If Daniele Labbate tends to explore more his Italo Disco influences when he releases under his main and most prolific moniker, Daniel Monaco, as Disco Mortale he leans into the realms of EMB, Techno/Disco hybrid sounds and Acid vibes. For his interpretation of “Diskobrute”, DM kept the main elements of the original but blended them with more robust and darker ingredients, such as an obscene bassline, a boisterous synth layer, and ominous vocals, resulting in another top-notch piece from this essential artist.

Berlin-based Ombra International love all things post-punk and Italo disco, and they continue to represent that fusion in style on their 21st release. First up HLM brings a heavy wash of synths to 'En Ecailles' before Tony Y Not get into a twanging new wave vibe on 'How About Lily'. Kimshies has a sleazier sound to offer up, while Rees pushes all manner of vintage arpeggios at the behest of 'Lucifer's Tango'. That leaves it to Endrik Schroeder to finish the set with the atmospheric 'Rainy Days', a perfect tribute to washed out 80s post-punk with a strong dose of disco pumping in its veins.

Dina Summer is a collaborative project of producer Kalipo and DJ-producer couple Local Suicide. Local suicide is Greek native Dina P., one of the first female DJs in Thessaloniki before moving to Berlin, where she met her husband and the other half of Local Suicide. The powerhouse couple made a name for themselves releasing music on labels such as Eskimo Recordings, Lumière Noire and Ombra and have played a crucial part in the rise of the dark disco scene. Meanwhile, Kalipo recently released his critically acclaimed fourth long player on KI Records and is part of the electro-punk band Frittenbude. Here he brings techno undertones to this unique project. Since 2019 the trio have been working together on a special blend of late 90’s electro with elements of 80’s disco and new wave. Their first EP on Iptamenos Discos received widespread praise and received massive support from German radio alongside plays from The Hacker, Digitalism, and Arnaud Rebotini. This distinctive new album’s sound comes from two synthesisers and one microphone. Pounding disco beats under rattling bass sequences. It's a sound with roots in Italo disco classics, new wave and punk combined with electroclash of the noughties but now ready for summer 2022 from the beach to the club. Edgy beats meet striking melodies as perfectly poppy hooks are carried by Dina's unique voice on cuts like 'Mars', and fast, urgent grooves like 'Uranos' offer up fine synth craft. 'Revenge' blends cold revenge fantasies with an 80's inspired electro-pop sound reminiscent of feel-good movies of the era without falling into cliché. 'Zig Zag' races on rugged but colourful disco drums, and 'Mirage' has an intoxicating synth lead with flashes of cosmic brilliance. Astral Records rounds out the month of May by welcoming Chris Schweizer to the label for his debut EP. Since his emergence in 2009, American producer Chris Schweizer has developed into one of trance music's most recognized artists. Armin Van Burren's Armada imprint would be the primary vehicle for Chris' energetic, club-effective and highly emotive sound. The Dutch imprint would play host to the Miami resident's production prowess in excess of one hundred times, with Black Hole, Coldharbour and Perfecto also being landing spots along the way. 2023 proved to be a pivotal year in Chris' evolution as an artist, with a shift in sound marked by a release via Paul Thomas' UV Noir, one where Chris would explore the slower tempo's and metallic melodies of melodic house and techno. Now, continuing on this explorative path, Chris unveils his first project of 2024 with his Astral Records debut 'Flashback'. 'Flashback' leads the release off in grand fashion and only furthers Chris' journey into the darker depths of melodic techno. Strong kick drums and a bed of crunchy rhythms provide the anchor for layers of flickering percussion and shapeshifting arps. Cruising with a commanding presence, there's a strong sense of flow across the first act, as striking chord stabs and a chant-like vocal sample not only add depth and character, but a tension filled rise leading into a seismic break, one where pyrotechnic synths and mutated vocals converge for an epic segue into a thunderous finale. Beneath the colossal sounds of 'Flashback' lies the equally impressive 'Odyssey'. Continuing the main room assault, Chris' pristine production chops serve him well here, bursting with ultrasonic qualities and a keen sense of drama and tension. In what is an energy rush for the ages, it's a rollercoaster of anthemic chord stabs and deconstructed vocals which provide a prophetic storyboard, while a foundation of titanic kick drums and rippling grooves keep the focus firmly on a peak time dancefloor.
