In the latest edition of our Local Selection series we hand over the hot seat to a good friend of Four Four and general sound head Pauly Doyle AKA Echo Potential. We've been eager to get this mix out for a while so make this your afternoon soundtrack. 

Pauly Doyle AKA Echo Potential is a Dublin based techno DJ and producer who set up the underground club night The Universe in 2019 having been involved in the scene for the best part of a decade. Prior to lockdown, he booked and welcomed guests such as, Kloves, LAG, Rene Wise, Yant, and Blasha and Allatt to bring the noise.

As well as being a talented DJ and producer, he has taken it upon himself to better the mindset and support available for those involved with the music industry. Having started his journey studying psychology, he has gone on to set up the wellbeing collective Bear in Mind, a collective who aim to raise awareness and support better wellbeing and mental health in Irish electronic music culture. Turn this up for an hour of techno slammers, expertly blended featuring tracks from a huge amount of Irish producers, including Aeron XTC, Rustal, Doug Cooney, Stuey Lyons (RIP) and tons more.

Local Selection 139: Echo Potential

We are delighted to share you that Taupe releases on Deeptrax' Tech-um label. After releasing on Indigo Aera's AE-X and Impress records in Berlin, Taupe launched his own recordlabel: Colours Records. On ‘Two sides of the same coin’ EP, Taupe displays his dualistic take on the techno genre, celebrating both its beauty and ruggedness.

With the Detroitish opener ‘Altum’, Taupe guides the listener into a blissful rabbit hole, filled with dreamlike-arpeggiators and pounding rhythms, bringing ultimo sci-fi sounds from far away.
‘Shimmer’ brings subtle acidic squelches, crisp hats and modulating synths paving the way into destination unknown.

On the B-side, Taupe takes a sudden left into more dark terrain. The menacing ‘Joker’ teases, agitates but ultimately drives you into a Dionysian state of madness which reminds us of Jeff Mills his fierce Axis stuff. Lastly, ‘Black Box’ will make sure that any residual ounce of energy in your body will get extracted with this vein 303 styled monster track!

PREMIERE: Taupe - Joker [Tech-um]

One of Detroit’s most sought-after musicians for every genre ranging from jazz to techno, Jon Dixon, is presenting his new EP titled ‘Detroit Get Down’.  You can now listen -only here to the premiere for his track 'How We Get Down (In Detroit)' to be released with the EP.

Back in July 2020, in the depths of lockdown and in a hungover state, we received an email with a new track and music video to match, featuring at the time for us, an unknown producer called Samuel Powell...

The self released track and video [edited by Josh Meany], was a nostalgic throwback to better times, featuring many haunts and locations in Dublin, with friends, laughter, emotion, portraits, dancing, club nights and society in full swing. The video and track hit hard as Ireland and the world was stuck between a never ending lockdown and isolations, coupled with immense anxiety and fears, wondering just how long we might have to wait to experience those feelings of togetherness again. 

To put it simply, the track and video was stunning, full of beauty, but immensely sad and poignant, which we absolutely loved and wanted to champion as best we could. It summed up the country.

Fast forward 17 months and our email has once again been lit up with the talents of Samual Powell's music, this time the email finds the world in a far better place, and this time the release is with one of our favourite labels, Shall Not Fade.

Today, we're delighted to premiere the lead from Samuel's brand new 'Owel's' EP, entitled 'Fold'.

An expansive EP comprising heady beats, post-rave influence, natural ambience and euphoria is next up from Shall Not Fade. Owls EP comes courtesy of Samuel Powell, a fresh find from Ireland who shows himself as one to watch with this stylish collection of tracks.

The opening track, ‘Fold’, is a gorgeously produced composition which reaches explosive heights of dramatic stabs and distorted synth lines. ‘Detuned’ follows with high-tension pads and a punchy breakdown, pacing straight into the pounding techno pulse of ‘Echrete’. More heavy beats come from ‘Seldom’, a post-digital rave soundscape. The title track, ‘Owls’, strips all of this back into a gentle ambient exploration, lead by subtle piano that draws the EP to a meditative close.
