Within the catacombs lay an artifact from a primordial age, untouched by the ravages of time under the protection of the magical wards that surrounded it and sealed within a series of hidden chambers and mazelike passages filled with untold horrors and traps that would deter even the most determined of invaders. The extent of this labyrinth was necessitated by the twin opposing powers represented by the artifact and its resting place, each capable of causing untold destruction should they be unleashed upon the world without being kept in check by the other. As such, the pair had been frozen in time this way for millennia, a lasting warning of the old powers that were better left unawakened.

In cataclysms that created the world, beings of unrestrained primordial energy roamed the land and constantly reshaped it to their will amidst a never-ending chaos of destruction. Those minor beings who hid beneath their feet had little recourse against the incursions of these beasts, and even should one be felled by their greatest of warriors it would only be reborn again from within the heart of the primordial chaos. So it was that the most skilled mages & craftsmen among them toiled for generations to create a blade that could pierce this endlessly beating heart, and bring tranquility to this world that had suffered under chaos for so long. Thus it was that the wards had been set and that the great labyrinthine temple had been constructed, for as the blade pierced the heart of all primordials it did further seal their power within the wound, so requiring that it may never be removed again lest it let their power spill forth into the world once more. To truly murder beings of such power, the ancestors had learned, one must hold the blade within their viscera for all eternity.

NUVERTAL after a brief appearance on Gydra’s album delivers his debut EATBRAIN release onto the ears of the label’s horde with REAL MURDER, an EP featuring three solo tracks and a collaborative work with EATBRAIN veterans GYDRA. Within, NUVERTAL brings a set of sonics that surge upon the oscillations of the EP’s electrified synths, fusing finely honed highs with devastatingly weighted basses for a work that is ready to energize the monstrous hearts of the EATBRAIN horde.

It had been decades since the city had been abandoned by its inhabitants, inundated by flooding, and transformed into a vast urban wetland. Where flowers once grew on windowsills and signs once hung above doorways one could now find dense reeds and tendrilled vines that crept through the city as an ever-encroaching force to be reckoned with, the slow and steady boring of their roots wearing cracks into the walls of what remained bit by bit over time. Along with the damage from the floods, the ecosystem that now had begun to flourish in this once-concrete jungle seemed determined to lay bare the secrets of its former inhabitants, no matter the risk that they may have posed once exposed.

In this way, the walls to the great factories and powerplants had been sundered, their steel-piped industrial insides spilling forth into the open air as petrified viscera that was itself soon too broken through. Within the vital systems that had once powered this great metropolis
surged a varietal of malevolent and benign compounds that began to mix with the swamped landscape that surrounded them, seething within its waters and unleashing a mutagenic plague on the inhabitants therein. Though many perished until the toxic deluge that poured forth from the city’s insides, select specimens survived and even thrived within this newly tainted environment as it wrought changes in their being as though it were the hand of god itself, sculpting from their flesh novel forms unseen before amidst even myriad worlds. The steel-clad wetlands thus became a nursery for these new forms of life, which germinated within their shaded alleyways before beginning to emerge into the wider world. Therefore it was that the first DANGEROUS WASTE PRODUCTS began to appear on the fringes of civilizations that neighbored this forgotten land, seeking to spread the corruption of their septic home and absorb new realms from which they could birth forth further mutated spawn.

With DANGEROUS WASTE PRODUCT, FOURWARD reemerge from the EATBRAIN horde to deliver a pair of sonic concoctions effused with noxious atmospheres and thundering basslines that leave a lasting effect on their listener’s constitutions, mutating their sonic preferences towards the duo’s characteristic sound.

The Cognitive Dissonance EP is the result of months of psychedelic sound design blended with a Neurofunk style that gels it all together. After playing with psytrance production for the first time in a decade, trying to create the signature sounds found within the genre while making a track in memory of TN.EXE/Astroscope (Tenille), the mission was to implement them into neurofunk/techy drum & bass. This is what gives the release its unique feel and vibe throughout.

The journey was years in the making; it's a culmination of life experience and passion for sound design. The primary inspiration for the release can be traced to years of psytrance and drum & bass festivals and events, and the inspiration was drawn from trying to meld these together.

The release is dedicated to Tenille, James' late soulmate and close friend to Ross, a Drum & Bass DJ who loved both Psytrance and Techy Drum & Bass and was created just a couple of months after she left us in late 2020. After building a life together in Melbourne, Aus and then moving to China and representing Unchained Asia, Tenille and James both played gigs together all over the country and travelled the world attending various festivals. One festival that left a real mark was an event in Germany called Freqs of Nature, this was a 7-day festival held at an abandoned WW2 airfield a couple of hours out of Berlin, featuring Heavy Neurofunk artists and Dark Psytrance artists. The vibe was psychedelic, but ominous at the same time, a tone that is woven throughout this release.

They established a temporary hub deep in the catacombs of the urban ultrascape, a sanctuary far from the eyes of the flesh-wrapped bio species of this technologically primitive planet. They were the last few of what was supposed to have been a peaceful incursion, an optimistic greeting between species that now stood as a declaration of violence written in the broken shards of their fallen brothers. As the chaos had blossomed around them and the incident unfurled its catastrophic and unstoppable cycle of causal probabilities and terminal results, they watched as their speaker was torn apart by the masses that pushed in against their number. Its limbs were ripped from its body each in turn, flailing and spilling hydraulic fluid as it twisted, reaching out to choke fragile throats as those merciless hands destroyed the beings they viewed as abominations. They managed to retrieve what was left of the body, separated and broken, but its heart and brain intact. Now in their refuge, with a click the last component slipped into place, its eyes flickered into life and its hand closed tight, its first thought - of death – the need to squeeze the life out of those fragile frightened masses.

Across six data-rich drum and bass tracks on Artificial Intelligence, the Polish producer Ankou fleshes out a story of sentience searching for a body. Epic, theatrical chord progressions and pounding percussion are balanced by an omnipresent layer of glitch so detailed and dynamic. It’s as if once Ankou created this thick layer of processed sound, he became incapable of controlling it. It trickles and crashes into every orifice and open space, like data soup moving swiftly and not gently through a birth canal.

Each song blends seamlessly into the next. This creates deep interludes of rest that allow the listener to catch their breath. Ankou takes a loose approach to layering across Artificial Intelligence. His bit-crushed synthesis fans out into differing frequencies that still come back to smoothly congeal with one another. The result is a lush soundscape that’s unmistakably digital yet seemingly alive. This breathing digital synthesis is the definitive mark of Artificial Intelligence, and it is maintained across the EP, including its two halftime tracks.

Whether releasing with Vale, Renraku, or on a compilation from The Rust Music, Ankou’s style has always been dark and dystopian. With this release, however, he creates a cohesive, thought-provoking narrative that guides the listener through that darkness. The debate over whether artificial intelligence is malevolent or benign will find no resolution here, but it will find a soundtrack.
