K² is a music addict and 1990’s rave scene survivor from Oslo who occasionally DJ's. A vinyl freak for over two decades, his ever-growing record collection includes a little bit of everything – from ambient to deep house, acid and hardcore. And techno – lots of it. This mix explores the deep, driving, hypnotic side of his favourite genre, where current  “drone techno” stalwarts such as Milton Bradley and Giorgio Gigli nestle snugly alongside oldschool heroes like Orlando Voorn and Robert Leiner. One of the intentions was to bridge the past and the present: The oldest track is from 1992, the newest is from this year. 

K²’s favourite track of all time is “Elektra” by The Source Experience. The first record he bought was a Knutsen & Ludvigsen LP (apologies to non-Norwegians). He’s written a few hundred record reviews and compiled a techno CD with some friends to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Oslo’s oldest squat (Blitz) . He gets misty-eyed at the sight of abandoned warehouses and disused industrial sites. His motto is borrowed from Max Duley and goes like this: "Raving is a way of life. In fact, I'm raving right now. I'm going to bed soon and I'm gonna rave there too." If you like this mix, you may buy him a beer. Or a copy of “Uncharted”.

A multi disciplinary artist she has been making waves in her hometown Glasgow with regular booth appearances at Sub Club, Riverside Festival and culminating in a recent appearance at the massive Terminal V festival in Edinburgh.

Most recently she has contributed two tracks to Somas legendary 'Soma Coma' series showcasing a talent for ambient scores and cemented her rising star status with a successful 'Kairogen all night long' last month in Glasgow.

Kairogen is a Glasgow-based artist whose unique sound seamlessly blends ambient house and deep techno, creating an exciting and distinctive identity within the electronic music scene. The name "Kairogen" is a creation of the artist, derived from the Greek words "kairos" meaning the right moment, and "gen" meaning to generate or create.
 
This name encapsulates the artist's belief in the power of seizing opportunities to create and inspire others to cultivate their own conditions for creativity to flourish. Kairogen's journey into music production began during her time at art school when a lecturer suggested incorporating a sound piece into an installation project. This sparked her passion for club culture and led her to delve into the world of Detroit techno and electronic music as an art form.
 
Through her work in album art and her experiences at Sub Club, a renowned nightclub, Kairogen gained a deep understanding of the electronic music scene and honed her musical preferences. The influence of peak-time music in the club environment has greatly impacted her own artistic style, driving her to explore sounds that complement the edges of dance music. Inspired by the drama and tension found in DJ sets, she gravitates towards the ambient and experimental side of the electronic spectrum.
 
Kairogen has already played at some of the best clubs and festivals in the scene, performing alongside well known artists within the scene such as Avalon Emerson, Slam and Amelie Lens.

His style and his DJ sets are influenced by the club culture there and outline a wide spectrum from ambient, house to deep techno. His approach is always focused on creating a certain kind of mood that lasts for hours and captivates the listener without necessarily following the trend of fast and especially hard sounds.

Kairogen is a DJ and producer from Glasgow, Scotland. In the two years she has been active as a DJ she has played some of the UK’s biggest clubs and festivals, including a residency with Slam’s Return To Mono at Sub Club, as well as supporting acts such as Avalon Emerson and Perc. 

A background of working in clubs and an education in visual arts has shaped Kairogen’s approach to playing and making music, enjoying textural rhythms and emotive melodies. Kairogen’s style can vary from ambient pieces through to house and techno - preferring to choose in the moment what seems fitting for the context and time rather than subscribing to a particular genre. Previous releases have been on labels such as Soma Records and deep techno label Space Textures.

Next up on our Local Selector Series is Kairogen. Her name Kairogen stems from the combination of two words: 'Kairos,’ the Greek meaning for 'the right moment' and 'gen,' meaning to generate or create. Waiting for the right moment has long been a common theme in her creative journey, having initially stemmed from her time in art school, where, through creating her own compositions to accompany her own installations and paintings, she was able to explore the connection between what can be seen and what can be heard, which in turn further deepened her fascination with electronic music as an art form. 

This then led to frequent visits to Glasgow, mainly to attend the revered Sub Club, a cultural institution of the city, where she would later find herself working. Making the transition from the dance floor to the bar was something that allowed her to take a step back from the smoke and the strobes and gave her the opportunity to gain a broader perspective on how a club night unfolds. Being able to see how both respected residents and esteemed guests can open a room, build tension, and switch energy while keeping one eye on how dancers react and interact with what is around them served as the key to shaping the fundamentals that have stuck with her on her path to date. Having fully immersed herself in this type of environment, the next gradual step was to channel her own experiences into DJing. Creating and curating her own radio show 'Space-Time' gave her the ideal platform to showcase some of the sounds she is drawn to, based around blissful ambient and hazy downtempo, while maintaining the same cerebral depth when flowing through both BPMs and genres. 

Along with this, releases on both Soma and Space Textures demonstrated her ever-evolving production skills to a wider audience. It’s easy to see why, soon after, opportunities to play out presented themselves, which she has since seized with both hands. Initial warm-up slots at illustrious nights at Sub Club and Pressure turned heads and elevated her demand as a selector—key moments since vary from handing over to Avalon Emerson to all-night-long sets in her native city, from delivering soaring, peak-time techno at Return to Mono, where she is now a resident, to serving glitchy, sci-fi-infused 'IDM' in Bristol at a Headset party—the list continues to grow. On the mix front, stellar contributions to outlets such as MNMT and Slam Radio, alongside her and Niamh Jobson’s monthly 'Dub Series' broadcast, have been well-received and further cement her reputation as one to watch. Developing her own tastes and understanding through an ever-expanding wealth of first-hand experience, not just through DJing, but also through her current freelancing in areas such as lighting, sound and label artwork, has been influential in crafting her own unique soundscape.

Kairogen’s strength lies in her own versatility, preferring to play what feels right for the moment while remaining willing to adapt to any given situation. Not limited by the constraints of genre, she has the ability to flow between the conventional and unconventional, where you may just be as likely to hear a soulful, floor-focused Dave Angel cut from thirty years ago as you are to hear the latest avant-garde offering from Delsin Records. This open-minded approach, contrasted with her single-minded belief in exploring the deepest, dreamiest corners of each record she plays, creates a musical narrative that needs to be heard to be believed.

This sublime mix was recorded at Slam's monthly Return To Mono party at the Sub Club in Glasgow. After that night Niamh Jobson was immediately asked to become a resident at RTM. 

some heartfelt words from kairogen:
it’s hard to process that i won’t be able to dj with niamh jobson again when we were just getting started.

i remember meeting before this set to practice, niamh realising she’d forgotten all her usb’s - later found in the washing machine. that day, it felt like we were making breakthroughs, refining our styles and finding a space further up the bpm scale that worked together. i called it ‘dark groove’ - her minimal, stylish sound with a funky, sexy edge that kept things rolling without being too obvious.

we were excited to play, but the night had its challenges. niamh had been battling osteosarcoma and had recently had her leg amputated, now replaced with a silver sparkly prosthetic. my playlists hadn’t copied over, which i realised five minutes before the set - shaking hands, sweat forming - until niamh handed me a spare usb and i got back on track.

niamh was so unwell at the time that even djing was hard. i remember fixing the jogwheel when she could hardly reach, sorting her wig, and narrowly saving a track from cutting to silence.
we laughed when i also accidentally paused the track that was playing - we’d both always panic but laugh through these moments, which is what friendship behind the decks is all about. some things going wrong and loads of things going right is what makes djing fun, especially b2b - being in sync while keeping individuality.

niamh’s ability came so quickly and effortlessly, and i only wish we had been able to hear more. she had a deep knowledge of sound for her age. it’s frustrating that she had so much more to give, but what she achieved musically in such a short time was huge and will always be a special memory.

Trust the Bha crew to bring you some holiday cheer. 

Back in 2011, the Bha crew hosted The Modern Deep Left Quartet, an offset the acclaimed Cobblestone Jazz, led by the singular Mathew Jonson alongside Tyger Dhula, Danuel Tate and The Mole at Aurus, Bombay, one of our (and the city’s) most unforgettable sun-kissed terrace parties, which spawned countless “Sundowner” imitations. 

The music shuttled between jazz improvisation, deep electronic music cuts and some of the irresistibly hypnotic Cobblestone Jazz & Mathew Jonson sound. It was tasty, it was groovy, it got downright rowdy (as most Bha gigs eventually are) as four men huddled behind a ton of analogue gear produced inspired moments of a spontaneous electronic music jam. 

Here’s the recording of that two-hour plus journey as proof.
