A CONVERSATION IN WALTER’S CAFÉ
KENT, OH, 1973

In the ‘70’s, North Water Street in Kent, OH was the place to be for fantastic original music, cheap drinks and easy hook-ups.  And the place to be within the place to be was Walter’s Café – a daytime bum bar that became the nighttime watering hole for artists, musicians, on-the-lam terrorists, dreamin’ low riders and all kinds of angel-headed hipsters (of course, I know where I stole that line from…so don’t bother telling me).  
Tonight tho (as in a 1973 “tonight”), eavesdrop on Chris and Alanna as they get to know each other…or too much about each other?

[FYI: I salvaged this from a stalled CD project of new songs &/or writings about all the women who have influenced me.  It’s my first attempt at writing a theatrical scene, and everything in the story really happened, tho not on the same evening.]

A CERTAIN KIND OF FOOL

PIN 2 HOT is the latest iteration of this city’s constantly inventive, ever-evolving Akron Sound.  Take seasoned, pedigreed musicians playing recognizable rock ‘n’ roll/folk/soul melodies and riffs, and deconstruct/reassemble them in the style of the great Free Jazz improviser, Albert Ayler.  We’re a “noise” band, but where so many in this genre strive to sonically express pain and anger, our approach is one of delight and fun.  We are Chris Butler (guitar), Bob Ethington (percussion), Corey Jenkins (bass), Michael Aylward (guitar), Jacob Trombetta (pedal steel), Matt Reese (cello) and Taylor McIntosh (reeds).  We play the classics…but like you’ve never heard them before.

Off and On

Thought to put this up in the interest of proving to myself that I'm goshdarn prolific, this being the fourth track I've completed in two weeks. Hitting a high G repeatedly is really not for me. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In Bed With Boadicaea

Rather very melancholy rumination on the lines of 'Ooh what happened to you, whatever happened to me?' sorta thing. I like the warmth of 70's electronic sounds. Slightly Sufjan-ish maybe, certainly economical - just synth and voice.

Lord, whatever became of everyone
That I ever knew?
What became of Anything,
And everyone it happened to?

Where has everybody gone?
The things I was going to say?
What happens when the wind comes,
To all the things it blows away?

Do they lean across and kiss 
Someone to say goodnight?
Will they treasure what they'll lose and 
Cannot sleep without the light?

All the things I was going to say to them,
My bird-formation friends,
Who emerge then disappear,
Then glimpsed again sometimes, like deer.

We will walk under yellow skies
And suns are low;
Take my hand, I thought I knew the way,
Now I don't know.

What Happened To Everyone

Done quite quickly and distractedly while working on a more fully-invested track - took just a couple of evenings. Early-mid 70's Stevie maybe, but not as good. Describing how some cute wee boys, loved by their mothers, grow up to be terrorising brutal dictators.

Little Men

Loathsome guitar solo spoiling a very breezy disco track, bringing together Sly Stone's 'If You Want Me to Stay' and Freez's 'Southern Freeze', both of which are better, but aren't about thanking a life-partner for sparing the songwriter from a dream-like emptiness, prompted by sight of an old travel brochure for coach-tours to The Trossachs.
