This is not really gamelan.

However, I do play and perform gamelan in my spare time and having had a show this last weekend I've been rehearsing a lot recently. Some of the parts I've had to learn have been pretty complex. So what I've done is written them into Ableton, in MIDI form so that I can hear what they're meant to sound like so I can copy the parts / patterns and so on and get them right. It's been pretty useful actually. There's one piece that I'd be really struggling with if I didn't have Ableton "teaching" me…but after I'd programmed it in it made a lot more sense.

This is the result of one such trial. Only some of the parts are as they should be…others are tweaked slightly (i.e. bonang parts rhythmically altered)...or completely made up (the bassline for starters.....although it is inspired by another rhythmic part). But the piece does show the type of tempo changes and interlocking parts that feature prominently in gamelan. Here it sounds like 90s trance or something Chris & Cosey would have done :)
