Very, very good piece! And awesome performance and recording too

Performed by Mürztaler Sinfonieorchester (dir. Ernst Smole) at the cathedral of Neuberg/Mürz on 15 Sep 2000.

Vier Gruppen zu je einer Trompete und einer Posaune sind in den vier Ecken eines großen und sehr halligen Aufführungsraumes um die Zuhörer herum positioniert. Die Komposition gewinnt ihre akustischen Dimensionen aus der Selbstbeschränkung, die sich der Komponist bei der Wahl des Instrumentariums auferlegt hat. Der homogene Klang der Blechbläser läßt wenig koloristische Effektmöglichkeiten zu. Doch gerade aus der Enge des klanglichen Spektrums erwächst die Vielfalt der Affekte. Alle Instrumente sind mit einem Wah-Wah-Dämpfer ausgestattet, der die Ausführung der in dem Werk vielerorts auftauchenden Ein- und Ausblendevorgänge erleichtert. Diese Fade-in- und Fade-out-Prozesse – in der Natur der Blechblasinstrumente an sich nicht vorhanden – beginnen im Unhörbaren, schwellen bis zu einem bestimmten Maximum an, um wieder im Unhörbaren zu enden.
four2eight zeichnet sich durch gerade durch die filigrane Feinarbeit innerhalb der Gegebenheiten eines homogenen Klangkörpers aus. Aus der homogenen Einheit entwickelt sich eine feinstverästelte Klangvielfalt, die mit minimalen Mitteln einen maximalen Hörraum erzeugt. Dieser vielschichtigen Binnenstruktur des Werkes wohnt ein zutiefst aufklärerisches Moment inne, das in der enzyklopädischen Ausschöpfungen der Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten begründet scheint. 'BimL' uses an Ebow, manually placed directly on the strings as the score dictates. No edits or dub-ins.
Score:
Two musical loops, I and II, share three crossing points, A, B and C, from where the performer can ‘switch sides’. One can start and end in either loop at one of the three crossing points but one must play all sections at least once. The top stave represents the ebow, played with the right hand, and the lower stave the keys of the piano, played with the left hand.
