Expressing a musical venture that draws from the combined roots of IDM, house and techno, Mind Against are the Italian native but Berlin based project of Alessandro and Federico Fognini. Heavily affiliated with DJ Tennis’ revered Life and Death camp, the duo embody a sound that they say is “difficult to describe”, instead referring any attempts to define their sonic identity to the psychedelic hooks of 1980s soundtracks and dancefloor antics of Milan’s imperative parties. Currently in the midst of a European tour, the duo are about to stop off at our Charterhouse corner for the very first time when they join DJ Tennis, Clockwork and our main man, Terry Francis in Room Two. But before the aforementioned event, both Alessandro and Federico have kindly taken a few moments out of their busy schedule to tell us what they’ve been up to over the past few and deliver a new and exclusive promo mix along the way...

As a studio and live musician for many German major artists, Johannes Brecht was able to build a reputation as a talented newcomer in recent years. A hardware whiz who acted mostly in the background - this is where Brecht felt most comfortable. Therefore, it makes little sense to pigeonhole the man from Stuttgart in only one genre. 

With a few visits to the Netherlands already under his belt, Brecht is now returning to the low country during ADE for a performance at his newly found label: Diynamic. At Loveland's Diynamic ADE Showcase this year, you will find many other artists from the Hamburg house imprint like Solomun, Adriatique, NTFO, H.O.S.H., Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Stimming, Karmon, Thyladomid, Magdalena and many more.

I came across Amandra and his work through a brilliant release on his Ahrpe records. "Ovend - Marathon" and it opened a door to some consistently high quality music from that avenue. His new double EP "Drachme Tolosate" is an embodiment of that consistency, on a vinyl there are normally tracks you think are a bit so-so, especially on a double. But not on this one. Consistency sets genius apart from talent and this mix offers more of the same. Atmospheric, warm and dark all at the same time with Amandra's own brand of energy layered on top.

Charlotte de Witte - When We Dip 078

Today we welcome a name that has become synonymous with Toronto’s dance music community: Borzoo. With over 16 years of experience behind the decks, Borzoo has had his hands in just about every aspect of the industry. Whether it’s playing Toronto’s internationally acclaimed Electric Island concert series, or acting as both owner and resident DJ at the city’s beloved and former Cabal, Borzoo’s contribution to the scene has been paramount. 

It was during his years of study in Dubai when Borzoo began exploring the world of DJing. Working part time for a nightlife magazine, he began to network his way through the tightly-knit circle of industry insiders. Soon, Borzoo found himself holding down the opening slot at many of the major clubs. Fast forward to today, and Borzoo has enjoyed gigs at AIM Montreal, ADE in Amsterdam, and a majority of Toronto’s nightclubs including CODA, Cabal and Nest to name a few. 

His sound is always evolving. Whether it’s downtempo electronica or big, progressive breaks, Borzoo notes “every environment and vibe requires a different sound.” The mix he delivers for us here today comes from his opening set at Aether, an underground club in the heart of Budapest. Listen as Borzoo exhibits a sincere understanding for what an opening slot entails. With calm composure, he delivers 2 hours of gradual progression, pulling back to tease his listeners, while setting the tone for the journey that lies ahead — a task that could only be achieved by a seasoned DJ such as himself. Every now and then, life calls us to slow down. To halt the plans, thoughts and responsibilities clouding our minds. To take a moment of silence. To close your eyes. To breath deeply. As summer slows its pace, the cosmic energy invites us into a deeper state of reflection. Thus, we were thrilled when Toronto artist Sam Zenn approached us with the idea to create an exclusive ambient set.

“Life can be very challenging at times,” he explained. “It’s great to have a chill and uplifting sound to lay back, relax and/or meditate with, especially since nothing connects stronger with our true inner beings other than music… food for the soul!”

Sam Zenn needs little introduction. As a DJ, he is a true chameleon, adapting to any dance floor put before him. His rich, hypnotic sound and technical dexterity behind the decks makes him stand out amongst fellow peers. The only attributes that shine brighter than his skill set are his warm, genuine demeanour and humble stance. It’s no wonder that many of the country’s top venues have booked Sam, including Toronto’s Footwork and CODA, Vancouver’s Gorg-o-mish and Celebrities, and festivals like Bestival Toronto and Vujaday in Barbados.
