Godzilla Disco Podcast

One could say Griffin Bourjeaurd is a bit of a musical nomad. Born in Toronto, raised between Texas and BC, and currently residing in Los Angeles, one element that has remained constant throughout his life is music. Growing up with a father in a band, Griffin has been playing instruments for a majority of his life. However, it wasn’t until 2008 when he began producing his own tracks, and shortly after took up the art of DJing. 

Although music has always been his vital passion, it was not something that he considered to do professionally until recent years. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in finance, which he pursued for a few years, Griffin finally made the jump into the music industry and hasn’t looked back since. 

His sound is deeply influenced by blues and today’s mix is one that he holds close to his heart, explaining “For years, I’ve had all these ideas of things I would like to combine from different artists and genres, but never really heard anyone doing it. I decided to make a piece of music with all my own material, combining all my influences – blues, classic rock, techno & house – into one project. This is the first project I’ve ever created with all my own material. It was actually made for my friends and I to listen to after a long night, while watching the sun come up. I was never planning to release it, but here we are!”

Samuel Kindermann, better known as Einmusik is the man behind the machine. Fusing raw, melancholic and fervent sounds to create productions that are remarkably emotive, Einmusik is a true master of his craft. 

At moments you can hear influence from his early days of producing Drum n' Bass, with quick, intricate breakbeats before melting into a soft, melodic daze. Each transition resounds with mindful fluidity, making an Einmusik set a journey within its own. Meet Sunju Hargun. Born in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Thailand's most densely-populated city, Bangkok has undoubtedly shaped Sunju's approach to music. Drawing inspiration from technology and the punk ethos, Sunju describes his sound as "Futuristic, Weird, Hypnotic and Alien."

We first met Sunju in February of 2016 during a visit to Bangkok's most established nightclub, GLOW, where he was manning the decks. As we danced about the darkly lit club, we found ourselves completely transfixed by Sunju's concoction of alternative, left field techno. Fast forward one year later, and today we are thrilled to invite Sunju to the mixing board, as he curates this episode of the Godzilla Disco Podcast, noting "2016 was full of mixed feelings and emotions, as there were points of happiness and points of struggle to find creativity and inspiration. Musically, I had been challenging myself to dig deeper and find records that would sound different from everyone. But, I realized in the end the only way to do that is to play from your heart and stay weird, so here is 60 minutes of me speaking from my heart and staying weird. Today we welcome a name that has become synonymous with Toronto’s dance music community: Borzoo. With over 16 years of experience behind the decks, Borzoo has had his hands in just about every aspect of the industry. Whether it’s playing Toronto’s internationally acclaimed Electric Island concert series, or acting as both owner and resident DJ at the city’s beloved and former Cabal, Borzoo’s contribution to the scene has been paramount. 

It was during his years of study in Dubai when Borzoo began exploring the world of DJing. Working part time for a nightlife magazine, he began to network his way through the tightly-knit circle of industry insiders. Soon, Borzoo found himself holding down the opening slot at many of the major clubs. Fast forward to today, and Borzoo has enjoyed gigs at AIM Montreal, ADE in Amsterdam, and a majority of Toronto’s nightclubs including CODA, Cabal and Nest to name a few. 

His sound is always evolving. Whether it’s downtempo electronica or big, progressive breaks, Borzoo notes “every environment and vibe requires a different sound.” The mix he delivers for us here today comes from his opening set at Aether, an underground club in the heart of Budapest. Listen as Borzoo exhibits a sincere understanding for what an opening slot entails. With calm composure, he delivers 2 hours of gradual progression, pulling back to tease his listeners, while setting the tone for the journey that lies ahead — a task that could only be achieved by a seasoned DJ such as himself. The greatest artists are selfless artists. They create work not only as a means of freedom of expression, but which also contribute to society as a whole. Edmonton's Andrew Williams, known to the music community as Dunmore Park is without a doubt one of those artists. Along with creating incredibly unique works of sound, Dunmore Park is also the Co-Founder of Edmonton's first electronic music production school, Night Vision Music Academy, and Western Canada's first electronic-based music convention, the Alberta Electronic Music Conference. Today we turn our gaze towards our very own backyard as Kye, known to the music community as 'Techno Shaman' prepares more than 2 hours of smooth, melodic grooves for our listening pleasures! Raised just outside of Toronto, Kye began his DJ career out on the dance floor, attending various raves across the city. It was Much Music’s iconic ‘Electric Circus’ television program that spurred Kye’s interest in learning the art and skills of mixing. 

As a performer, Techno Shaman has had the privilege of playing the renowned BPM Festival, along with various Toronto nightlife staples such as Boa and Comfort Zone. He describes his music as “organic music wiggles with depths.” With his very own label in the works for 2017, Techno Shaman looks forward to turning his energy towards production. “With this mix, I’ve tried to take listeners from a deep, musical vibe, ending with a more clubby feeling.” — Kye.

For the past 9 years, Talal Chaudhry, known to his friends and fans as 'Lost Boy' has been meticulously honing his skills as a DJ-Producer. His musical dexterity and originality is something to marvel, as he seamlessly mixes from one track to another, creating a unique journey for his listeners. 

Born and raised in Pakistan, Talal moved to Toronto in 2006. After attending a few parties, it became clear that a life surrounded by music was his calling. Today, he's enjoyed playing a variety of clubs & festivals, including Kater Blau (Berlin), Keizerpark Ghent (Belgium), and on July 1st he'll join the stage with DJ partner Zoi at Toronto's Electric Island concert + picnic series, performing under 'Talal & Zoi'.

When looking at Clouzer today, it’s hard to picture this bright, blue eyed soul covered in piercings while banging a head full of dreadlocks to heavy metal. But, you better believe it because that’s exactly where Clouzer’s journey with music began.

Born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Clouzer was once a “heavy metal dude, playing guitar in an alternative band.” During this time, he took up work as a CD pusher for a small music and video store. Taking on the role as the ‘Metal’ specialist, Clouzer was soon introduced to the sounds of electronic music through a co-worker. He credits this individual’s impeccable taste and his very first rave as the catalysts that would push him towards a career in electronic music.

In 2007 Clouzer recorded his first mix. Over the next 10 years, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery, developing his skills both as a DJ and Producer. Today, he may heard playing across Toronto at CODA, One Loft and the Secret Society Sessions.

When creating this mix today, Clouzer notes “I didn’t feel any borders when I was working on it, the borders you usually feel when you work on a podcast series. I realized that it’s a great occasion to mix something special for me. I used to play this kind of Electric genre (nu disco, electro) quite often back home, especially at home private parties, but I have never made any mix like that for the last 10 years of my journey. It wasn't easy, as tracks in this particular genre are specific and you don`t have much room for transition, as the BPM variety is so random. I started my mix in 108 and finished it by 127. It took lots of effort to finally make a story that satisfies me.” We hope you enjoy the story too!

Sadeq’s ability to transform a space and create atmosphere is astounding. A successful Architect by day and affluent DJ by night, wherever Sadeq goes, he is always welcoming audiences with his warm and creative nature. 

Sadeq began spinning in 1991 after befriending a Jamaican resident DJ in a Nicosia (Cyprus) nightclub. Over the next 20 years, his love affair with music would continue to evolve, as life and art does. 

While completing his degree in Architecture, Sadeq continued to keep a foot in the door of many intimate rooms including New York’s legendary Sullivan Room, Opium Den, WST Lounge and Toronto-based venues Parlour, Cabal, The Kajama Tall Ship & more!

"This is the first time I've done a podcast with only my productions. To be completely honest, it was scary at first, I wasn’t very sure about it." Meet Christian Berger. The last few weeks have certainly been an adventure for Thai DJ-Producer Dan Buri, who just returned from Vietnam after playing Epizode Festival for the second year in a row. The 11-day party marathon was set upon the picturesque island of Phú Quóc where festival-goers travelled from all corners of the globe to surrender their souls to the music. 

Attendees were able to catch Dan Buri on two occasions; once at the EGG Stage and again, the following evening at the main stage where he set the tone for HYTE's highly anticipated showcase. 

Today, Dan Buri manifests some of that magic into our latest Godzilla Disco mix, stating: "As a post-EPIZODE mix, I have prepared a blend of my two aliases Dan Buri and Bahtik. I have always played with the idea to fuse both styles into a mix, blending the organic and ethnic sounds of Bahtik with the more progressive and driving style of Dan Buri. Every now and then, life calls us to slow down. To halt the plans, thoughts and responsibilities clouding our minds. To take a moment of silence. To close your eyes. To breath deeply. As summer slows its pace, the cosmic energy invites us into a deeper state of reflection. Thus, we were thrilled when Toronto artist Sam Zenn approached us with the idea to create an exclusive ambient set.

“Life can be very challenging at times,” he explained. “It’s great to have a chill and uplifting sound to lay back, relax and/or meditate with, especially since nothing connects stronger with our true inner beings other than music… food for the soul!”

Sam Zenn needs little introduction. As a DJ, he is a true chameleon, adapting to any dance floor put before him. His rich, hypnotic sound and technical dexterity behind the decks makes him stand out amongst fellow peers. The only attributes that shine brighter than his skill set are his warm, genuine demeanour and humble stance.
