IN BRIEF 
Renowned for their sublime, lyrical take on dance music, DC / Berlin based duo Benoit & Sergio return to their spiritual home of Visionquest with some freshly crafted groove ridden thrills. More set in the smoke and heat of the club than their vocalised bittersweet visions, the ‘Your Darkness’ EP showcases the duo at their dancefloor focused playful best whilst incorporating infectious vocal samples, searing melodies and pulsing rhythms. Opener ‘Splash’ is at once murky and tropical as the bassline grinds underneath light footed percussion whilst title track ‘Your Darkness’ is a deep and moody groover with signature rich synth work. Closing track ‘Beat Macho’ is a wayward beast with a darker edge and satisfyingly complex chugging framework that makes for a heady trip into the depths of the night.

 BACKGROUND
o+ Leaving an indelible mark on a selection of pioneering labels since 2009 - Spectral Sound, DFA, Hot Creations, Culprit and of course Visionquest have all fallen prey to Benoit & Sergio’s unique brand of sensuous electronics. The duo first appeared on Visionquest for the imprints’ inaugural release in 2011 ‘Where The Freaks Have No Name’ featuring the ubiquitous ‘Walk And Talk’ - a quintessential slice of romantic techno. Then in late 2012 the ‘New Ships EP’ further demonstrated the duo’s ability to mix visceral energy with the emotional.   

o+o Gaining the title of iTunes breakthrough electronic artists of the year in 2011 and featuring in RA’s best live act poll in 2011 and 2012, they also had the tracks ‘Everybody’, ‘Principles’, ‘Let Me Count The Ways’, and ‘Walk and Talk’ variously charted in top 20 year-end polls for Resident Advisor, Mixmag and DJ Mag. The duo have since been enlisted to remix heavyweights such as Matthew Dear, Metronomy, Hot Natured and covered Daft Punk.

o+o+ This year the duo is working on completing their long anticipated debut album co-produced with DARKSIDE aka Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington, and set to be released on the magically diverse Other People imprint. A single will be dropped as a teaser in the not too distant future.

Bringing Soul Clap Records ever further into the future is the multi-disciplined Jay Haze. With well over a decade of focus in Photography, Film, Music and Video Jay's interest in Peace Activism has drawn him off the dance floor and deep into disaster zones, jungles and slums of the worlds most notorious regions. His widely known social based projects spread a positive tone of togetherness inspired by and routed in the dance music scene for more info check out his blog at www.jayhaze.org.

Jay has been a friend and mentor to us for more than a few years now. Not only is he a huge funk head, whose music we love, but we’ve spent many special moments looking out over the ocean from his beautiful apartment on the coast in Lima, Peru. One of the first unreleased songs he sent us back in 2012, even before we launched the label, was “Take A Dip”, a quintessential Jay Haze groove that added some serious guitar riffs and a solo that sent it to the stratosphere. We played it outside in the morning at Hideout Festival in Croatia that year and the reaction was immense, and was then followed by a year of tweets and emails asking what the song was.

One song does not an EP make and we’re very picky about our EPs here on The Mothership. It wasn’t until Jay send us two magical tracks that featured by an intriguing, exotic string instrument called the Mulatar built and played by his musical collaborator Jordi Lockruf that we had the full package. “Peru Berlin Connection” and “Mulatar House” are the first songs to ever be released that feature the Mulatar and we’re honored to have this special and very personal release on our label.

“This EP is super special for me not only because i was able to introduce a new instrument to the world via vinyl (how cool is that?) but it was made with friends, and with the intention to put more music into electronic dance music. The song “Take A Dip" was recorded with Signor Andreoni on the beach in Sardinia, magical moment- simplistic but to a feeling! the other songs were made with Jordy Lockruf, a man who not only possesses an immense natural talent for string instruments, but also makes them by hand himself! We have taken this record as an opportunity to showcase the Mulatar, this beautiful all wood instrument, which consists of a bass, harp and percussions on the back and sides. The sound of this instrument is soo distinct because of the way it slides. It is a slide instrument, with wax contact to wood. At this point there have been 16 of them made by hand, and the sound of this beautiful instrument continues to mesmerize every time we play her.”

Meet Sunju Hargun. Born in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Thailand's most densely-populated city, Bangkok has undoubtedly shaped Sunju's approach to music. Drawing inspiration from technology and the punk ethos, Sunju describes his sound as "Futuristic, Weird, Hypnotic and Alien."

We first met Sunju in February of 2016 during a visit to Bangkok's most established nightclub, GLOW, where he was manning the decks. As we danced about the darkly lit club, we found ourselves completely transfixed by Sunju's concoction of alternative, left field techno. Fast forward one year later, and today we are thrilled to invite Sunju to the mixing board, as he curates this episode of the Godzilla Disco Podcast, noting "2016 was full of mixed feelings and emotions, as there were points of happiness and points of struggle to find creativity and inspiration. Musically, I had been challenging myself to dig deeper and find records that would sound different from everyone. But, I realized in the end the only way to do that is to play from your heart and stay weird, so here is 60 minutes of me speaking from my heart and staying weird. Every now and then, life calls us to slow down. To halt the plans, thoughts and responsibilities clouding our minds. To take a moment of silence. To close your eyes. To breath deeply. As summer slows its pace, the cosmic energy invites us into a deeper state of reflection. Thus, we were thrilled when Toronto artist Sam Zenn approached us with the idea to create an exclusive ambient set.

“Life can be very challenging at times,” he explained. “It’s great to have a chill and uplifting sound to lay back, relax and/or meditate with, especially since nothing connects stronger with our true inner beings other than music… food for the soul!”

Sam Zenn needs little introduction. As a DJ, he is a true chameleon, adapting to any dance floor put before him. His rich, hypnotic sound and technical dexterity behind the decks makes him stand out amongst fellow peers. The only attributes that shine brighter than his skill set are his warm, genuine demeanour and humble stance. It’s no wonder that many of the country’s top venues have booked Sam, including Toronto’s Footwork and CODA, Vancouver’s Gorg-o-mish and Celebrities, and festivals like Bestival Toronto and Vujaday in Barbados.
