Strap yourself in, because the opening to Chemtrails may blow your socks off. A spiky start to the week, before getting into a more pop/indie groove for a couple of tracks. The Invisible Minds track has been getting deserved regular plays by Steve Lamacq, unlike all the others in theis week's list! We then move through reggae (Bob & Gene) into soul/funk with the awesome James Hunter, Isabelle Brown (who certainly has the voice to become a real star) and Visioneers, before closing out with a couple of more dance oriented numbers. Pick of the week? Isabelle Brown is a real talent, I'm a huge fan of James Hunter. and I love the Chemtrails track, but it's Invisible Minds "Yo Mae Leh" that edges it this week. It's a guaranteed earworm.

Producer Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod is back with another supple Reggae delight. After the success of The Inversions' last collaboration with Bob & Gene, Axelrod once again takes a seat in the Producer’s chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. Originally tweezed from the beautiful MO DO tape boondoggle, back in ‘05 - ‘06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the Daptone family.

One night in 1971, frustrated by their lack of the success, Bobby Nunn and Gene Coplin sat in the basement of 50 Orange Street and put together a record expressing said frustration. Equipped with only a guitar, bass, and piano - no drums (though you don’t even notice) - the two crafted an immaculate slice of Soul, aptly titled “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know)”. Fast forward 46 years, and now accompanied by the rocksteady rhythms of The Inversions - the vocal stylings and poignant lyrics are reborn, sounding as fresh today as it did when it was crafted down in that magical basement. The VERSION flip is a delay laden masterpiece produced and arranged by Axelrod. A must for fans of Dub and Reggae alike. A truly gorgeous record!

Hats off for Smirnoff for not only putting its money where its mouth is, but being genuinely interested in the awareness and importance of diversity.  For the ad’s soundtrack, I recreated the iconic song ‘Stars' by Sylvester feat Sam Sparro and this “Cosmic Energy Dub” is one for the DJs who continue to make nightlife such an inclusive space. Originally released in March 2006 and virtually impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, BBE are excited to announce a special ten year anniversary edition of the classic Visioneers album Dirty Old Hip Hop. Brainchild of 4hero and Reinforced Records founder Marc Mac, the Visioneers project first appeared on a series of limited edition 7” vinyl releases. Marc began re-imagining his favourite hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst also re-introducing the excitement and musicianship of the records from which they were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born. Drawing on the musical talents of Somatik and drummer Luke Parkhouse, both regulars on the 4hero sessions, this largely instrumental album also featured stunning performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice. An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms, weaving the two together until even the most ardent purist will find it hard to define any space between. Dirty Old Hip Hop was shortlisted for Gilles Peterson‘s coveted Worldwide album of the Year award in 2006.
