Next up in our mix series is Loek Frey, out of Amsterdam, an artist operating from an elusive abyss. Immune to external constraints, the OQAD label head is paving the way for a newfound sound within contemporary electronic music. While performing either as DJ or live, during peak time or sit down - Loek never fails to channel his liminal space of frequencies, resulting in appearances at places such as De School, Ankali, and Tresor. His productional oeuvre covers infinite tempos, lengths, and moods, which he manifests through his OQAD imprint and releases on labels such as Omen Wapta.

In this mix, Loek takes on a mind tickling trip both for the mind and body. Whether it’s IDM, techno, drum-and-bass, or breakbeat, Loek manages to fuse an unmatched sonic spectrum into a distinctive aesthetic at the collision point of the organic and mechanic, with a sound design through a razor-sharp minimalistic scope.

It is with great pleasure to feature talented emerging artist Aerae for our 24th Herbarium episode. She convinces us with the great energy that her productions and mixes radiate. Trippy, tribal characteristics combined with experimental soundscapes is what we grasp from her output.

Aerae chose the plant Calea zacatechichi as inspiration for her mix.
It is a shrub found throughout Central America, especially in the highlands of Mexico. Indigenous people prepare a ritual infusion with its leaves, which resemble nettle leaves. After drinking it, one lies down and experiences the ensuing dreams which are believed to provide insights into healing current ailments.

Some words about her thoughts behind the mix : 
I have therefore imagined an entire journey of what this plant provides when consumed. From the very first seconds to the last. Passing through different states, different sensations, and encounters. Datura Stramonium is a psychoactive deliriant traditionally used in folk medicine and occult ritual. The drug induces a state of total confusion and disassociation, with users reporting not knowing where they are for days at a time. Join me on this long strange trip.

About Aerae

Under her former alias, she had the privilege of performing at various renowned festivals and clubs in France, such as I LOVE TECHNO (Montpellier, FR), Les Plages Electroniques (Cannes, FR), REF (Nice, FR), Kwartz Club (Nice, FR), Le Spot (Rouen, FR), and ADE (Amsterdam, NL). She has shared the stage with artists like Marcel Dettmann, Justine Perry, Ben Klock, François X, to name a few.
Her debut LP 'Percussive Reverie' released on Annulled Music, marks a turn in her production skills, which gained international support by artists like Claudio PRC, Spekki Webu, Evigt Mörker, Eric Cloutier, Laura BCR, Refracted and many more. It was selected as ‘Best Album of the year" on the popular German magazine GROOVE alongside prestigious artist like Donato Dozzy.

Herbarium No 24 - Aerae - Calea Zacatechichi

Maria Conesa aka Connie is a music lover, passionate about electronic music. She has been collecting for years, both in physical and digital format, and performing in the comfort zone of her home, but lately she has felt encouraged to perform with bigger audiences and has played in Barcelona venues such as the Macarena, Sala Taro or Rusc.
She insists that she is not a deejay and that, above all, she is a "come bafles" (speaker’s eater, in spanish, meaning someone who loves to be in the first row during a rave, right in front of the speakers)... But from TILECT we are certain that she is more talented than she believes and that is why we share this podcast with you and the description she wrote about her mixf:
"If you close your eyes, the prevailing atmosphere of this session will transport you to a dark and unknown world, full of monsters and strange characters. It's normal if you feel uncomfortable. I just hope that in the end you don't want to leave this place"

shakti's ( @sofia-builes ) music does not follow rules. Her art is built on structures that collapse and are reborn in eternal cycles, stripping music of its rhythmic conventions and taking it into the unknown. With ILLUD TEMPUS, he immerses us in a sonic exploration that defies time, taking us into a space where repetition is not just a simple recurrence, but the echo of a cosmic truth that manifests itself in ever-changing patterns.

Inspired by the concept of “that time”, a primordial state where the divine and the human intertwine in infinite cycles, this work transcends the merely musical and becomes an exercise in altered perception. ILLUD TEMPUS is a journey towards the eternal return, a confrontation with the idea that everything that has happened in the universe will repeat itself endlessly, identical and immutable.

From the ancient Babylonian myths that spoke of the destruction and rebirth of the cosmos to the Pythagorean and Stoic vision of the great conflagration, Shakti channels these principles into a dark, dense and visceral sound, where music unfolds as a living entity in constant regeneration. Each track is a passage to a time out of time, where erratic rhythms, abrasive textures and ethereal atmospheres confront us with the haunting notion of an inescapable destiny.

The patterns of ILLUD TEMPUS are abstract constructions that, like primordial forces, shape and deform reality at will. Percussion emerges from the depths of an unfathomable abyss, dislocated and devoid of familiarity. The layers of sound expand and contract like waves in a sea of fluctuating energy. Everything we hear here is at once past, present and future, coexisting in a single vibration that resonates in our consciousness.

With this EP, Shakti redefines the limits of experimental music, immersing us in a trance-like state where linearity ceases to exist and what remains is only the incessant cycle of creation, transformation and destruction. ILLUD TEMPUS is a sensory experience that confronts us with the very nature of time and drags us into a state of altered perception, where the inevitable repeats itself, over and over again, in an eternal and fascinating sound loop.
