From the opening tom-tom salvo, fuzz feedback and the 1-2-3-4 count… to the knowing swagger of the lyrics… and the star-turn on Vox organ by The Attractions’ Steve Nieve… it’s a 3:10 dose of undiluted Aussie rock.

“A mighty song. I had a good time recording this.”—Steve Nieve (Elvis Costello and The Attractions). His role stemmed from a dressing room chat when Greg supported Steve’s Australian tour. “I told him the producer suggested a ‘Steve Nieve’ keyboard part and he said: ‘I’ll do it!’”

The new double single, out on 19/5/25, comes with another Steve Nieve masterclass: an alternative mix of album track “Images of Love” that peels away the baggy-tinged rock bed to reveal a multi-layered keyboard ‘orchestra’ topped by shimmering Beatle-esque harmonies.

The original version of the song is looser and longer with some lyrics different to the final recording.
It was recorded low-fi-live into a laptop using the built-in microphone. The gas heater fan whirrs in background.

About The Different Version…

Steve Nieve's keyboard parts were the last to be recorded for the album version of “Images of Love”.

He recorded them remotely at his home in France early in June 2021, while we were locked down in Melbourne.

The tracks went straight into the mix which was completed by Kevin Shirley in Manly, Sydney, at the end of September 2021, as the last lockdown continued.

I remembered Steve’s note delivering the tracks: "I just listened back to just these keys and that makes a great different 2nd version."

So with “Just for Fun” which also features Steve on Vox Organ and Omnichord coming up as a single, I went back to the sessions and created this alternative mix showcasing Steve's keyboard orchestra.

When Kevin sent the mix he wrote: "Here's The Beatles! :)". In this version you can hear more of the backing vocals too.
