About My Blues and Rock Song

When I was writing songs for the album that became “Stone On Stone” there was one simple idea behind it.

We had started out being a rock band so we should still be a rock band.

We would make a record like the first one, like Nirvana made Nevermind, by playing the songs until we knew them inside out and then recording them.

It was a fun idea but it was also stupid because a world that wanted that record no longer existed.

So, driven as ever by the idea of the band rather than the band itself, I opened my song book and started throwing songs at the idea.

Some stuck, some didn't. A lot of songs were tried and discarded, recorded and retooled, written and rewritten.

But there still weren't enough rock songs, so I wrote two: Rock Song (formerly known as Mythical Rock Song) and My Blues.

Rock Song worked straight out of the box. My Blues took a few detours until I landed on the riff that underpins the verses.

By then I was making a record that was about rock bands. About the bravado and hubris and bombast. About how—soon if not already now—you couldn't make one like this if even you wanted to.

LIke it's-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it and-I-feel-fine kind of thing. Except I didn't feel fine. 

So I've got a bit to say here about the folly and futility of even trying while I'm burying it inside a time capsule that wryly mocks my ambition and archly celebrates it.

Like I said… it started out with a simple idea. But by the end there was no band.

“Rock Song (Radio Edit)” does what it says on the tin… it really is a rock song.

This amped-up, high-tempo, two-chord thrasher rocks right out of the blocks with a wigged out guitar solo and a snarling vocal. Imagine Iggy Pop fronting early Psychedelic Furs and you're halfway there.

It belongs on the radio so it gets a radio edit refresh paired with “My Blues (Uncut)” on a new double A-side edition that heralds the limited edition 180 gram vinyl release next month of the acclaimed album “Stone On Stone”, including a bonus “Unturned” collection of unreleased acoustic tracks.

The edit lets the tape run with studio chatter and sonic artefacts. ”Plug in my amp I‘ll show you how it‘s done“, say the lyrics, so now the song kicks off with the live crackle and buzz of the intro guitar being plugged in!

Both sides are about flip sides… euphoria and depression. “Rock Song (Radio Edit)” celebrates energy and attitude and spits in the face of inertia and apathy. In the protagonist’s world what he cares about is gone but he still plugs in anyway: “I don’t care if the kids don’t come”.

“My Blues (Uncut)” is a self-mocking, riff-driven romp inspired by The Who and driven by Ashley Naylor’s snarling Divinyls-like licks and searing Jeff Beck style lead guitar. The lyrics take the piss out of rock posturing, calling out all the rock tropes beaten by the blues, while the music declares the opposite!

“Stone On Stone” has already collected local and international airplay and featured in multiple best albums and favourites lists.
