Piece inspired by romanticism in the city: love within concrete walls, poetry beneath artificial light...

Three vocal parts (translated lyrics below) became in very different moods in the songwriter phase, so I couldn't fit them in the same tempo. Working hard on transitions, I got the following solution:

Intro: ad libitum
A: 6/4 & 5/4 at 147bpm
B: 4/4 at 220bpm
C: 4/4 at 293bpm

Such ABC pattern is repeated twice, structured with some city scenes, and 2nd 'C' part includes a guitar soloing lesson by https://soundcloud.com/paco-ray, old friend of mine, technical consultor and personal luthier ;)

New Sensation

To celebrate her 20 years of music production, Nadine de Macedo, a talented producer based in Germany (https://www.nadinedemacedo.com/), had the idea to invite around thirty musicians and producers to remix a selection of her best songs. I had the immense privilege of being part of this project, and Nadine entrusted me with "Frozen," a song written in 2006 and performed by the amazing Vera M. Van Bergh. This track is a little nuts.....

If you've ever battled a raccoon, this is the song for you, sung from the perspective of the perpetrator. Raccoons are wily little buggers and more than a little guile is needed to control the movements of an animal that has been trapped in a cage before.

Debated with myself a bit on adding more instruments and sounds but in the end decided that less was more. The "rhythm guitar" is a distorted saturated synth and the "lead" is a Logic Pro Heavy Metal guitar manipulated with the pitch stick on my synth. The difficult part was getting the swing on the drums right and the ADSR right on the main synth, modulation and LFO. Also played a bit with the compression to get a breathing sound.

About the raccoon - that battle is ongoing - physical deterrence is now in place.

The raccoon, also spelled racoon and sometimes called the common raccoon or northern raccoon to distinguish it from the other species, is a mammal native to North America. It is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in), and a body weight of 5 to 26 kg (11 to 57 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur, which insulates it against cold weather. The animal's most distinctive features include its extremely dexterous front paws, its facial mask, and its ringed tail, which are common themes in the mythologies of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas surrounding the species. The raccoon is noted for its intelligence, and studies show that it is able to remember the solution to tasks for at least three years. It is usually nocturnal and omnivorous, eating about 40% invertebrates, 33% plants, and 27% vertebrates. [Wikipedia]

I bet I met Belial Pelegrim (https://soundcloud.com/belial-pelegrim, https://belialpelegrim.bandcamp.com/) within the first 3 months of discovering Soundcloud; and man did he set the bar high. If you have yet to encounter his music while exploring this community, I would be flabbergasted. He is most definitely located in the left ventricle of this great circle of friends. :)

One of the things I genuinely admire about him (besides being an off-the-scale musical genius) is his tremendously generous nature in supporting the people of this community. Back when the idea of collaborating scared the living shit out of me, he actually offered me the opportunity; we then made ‘Fog Drinker’ (that was back in August of 2017. Wow! Where has the time gone?)… and after that, I wasn’t so horrified by the idea of collabs any more. Frankly, you survive the wild ride that is a Belial collab, and you’re pretty much fully acclimatized to the idea. Haha.

And here we are, almost 7 years to the day… and I have the great privilege of hosting our 8th musical soundscape… and this thing is superb if I do say so myself.

Sometimes our path, or journey as it were, leads us to an edge. Edges of self, life, circumstances, reality, cliffs, you name it… Some edges are dangerous, sharp and jagged, even life threatening. Other edges encourage us to traverse them. Back in the 1970’s, there was this great sand cliff we used to go to, in Northern Europe, where we could run and hurl ourselves off of it and land in the water below. It was exhilarating, as the hang time allowed for contemplation in the moment, during the free fall. It felt like we were flying like the bluebirds in the sky. At the base of the cliff, we hung out by the water. We were mostly unfamiliar with the freedoms we had found there. Harry ran off and intentionally lost his swim trunks on the beach, while chasing after a beautiful woman who herself was sans swimsuit. He was in love with her. She had other ideas. He was drinking heavily, then he passed out, ass up in the sand, under the blazing sun, after making a fool of himself. It was a sad moment all around. By the time we found him, he had a bad sunburn. Poor guy. Could hardly sit down. A bunch of us were camped in the forest, not far from the cliffs. That night, I was sitting by the fire next to a wild-eyed woman and asked her something in another language. She blew smoke in my face and laughed nervously as if taunting a bear. Then she kissed me. We all seemed to be chasing after a freedom that did not exist in this life, at least for us. Some of us would later die trying to find that same freedom. For some strange reason I survived. We were wild back then and maybe always will be. This song contains some of that freedom among other things.

This ripe piece of funk started with JJ essentially composing it on the e. Piano, organ, drums, and bass. He had the Eclectic Collective in mind when he did so, though. JJ actually is playing his drum kit on this one, so funkily that we decided to keep his drums in there. That didn't leave a whole lot of room for Ken to get in on it, but he managed to add a really cool ehru part. The ehru is a two stringed asian violin with a distinct high percussive sound. JJ's bass line was so well played and solid, we decided to keep it in there, too, which also left Josh searching for a place in the mix. He decided to go last with the lap slide to anchor the foundation of the blues idiom. But he did that after Stephen and Tez cast their spells on the song with their magical guitars. Tez can be heard with the trippy, delay-heavy staccato lines, and Stephen with the silky smooth crying blues lines throughout. 
  Of course, every great song needs a great mixer and producer, and we're lucky enough to have Stephen to do the honors on this one for us.
  This song represents The Eclectic Collective at our funky finest, and we always enjoy and appreciate when JJ starts a song for us. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

This song began as a well developed, funky disco idea Roy came up with on his guitar, and shared with JJ. JJ added a wonderfully complex orchestration of various keys, including brass, strings, and the sax solo you hear towards the end. 
  JJ invited Stephen Stephen first, who came up with the funky ass wah guitar that also carries the groove. Of course, JJ realized that this is a disco song, so he enlisted Ken to come up with one of his awesome beats to carry it along. JJ had a rudimentary bass line that he played himself, but decided to get me to do the honors instead. So, I came up with a totally new bass line designed to shake your cheeks.
Once it was in the can, we decided to ask have JJ mix it for us. This is a first time JJ has mixed a song for The Eclectic Collective, and we were all impressed with his work. Stephen mastered it, as he is a master masterer. 
  We're all really impressed and delighted with the experience of working with Roy and his music. He is a very talented artist with a lot of great music to check out on his page, too.
  We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it, and that it makes you shake your hips while you're doing the dishes, too!

It's been 8 months since Justin and I have worked together on a track. For our 4th collaborative project we decided to work in a bit of a different manner than in the past and agreed beforehand to putting something together that had some space to breathe, not worrying about the final length. Where in the past one of us would compose the basic framework and then go back and forth, adding, deleting, moving things around, this time we traded off on writing the various sections and then wove them together to create the final piece. For me, it's always a great creative experience working with @grevusanjl.

I had been really wanting to make new music with Calebass. I have been making a lot of songs that lean more heavily toward hip hop the last couple years and felt like heading back toward the direction of my earlier years on SoundCloud. Luckily Calebass was willing and ready and the music flowed easily and steadily. Jon did an amazing job adding an element of jazz with his bass and Janine really awakened the psychedelic spirit and Age of Aquarius with her vocals. It was extra bonus to have both Sinfields participate in this song making this a real SC family affair. Lyrically, I was inspired by the children’s book, Ox-Cart Man, which I love, and all the felt mouse toys I recently made for my cat at my daughter’s request.

One of the the great things about working with Justin @grevusanjl, is that we both operate on the principle that all things will take their own time and course, eventually evolving in a most natural way. This track took a couple of months to create, each of us working little by little until it was done. Sometimes the absence of pressure opens up the perfect setting for creating music.
