Natura Morta, "dead nature" or "still life". This album can be understood as a powerful study of the minute details of the art of electro-acoustic composition, as much as the Renaissance "nature morte" were a masterful display of the artist’s skill in portraying the glow of a ripe fruit, or capturing the light beaming on a vacant chair.

Six tracks, to be listened to as two long explorations in the art of variation and repetition. Layers of drums and percussions intertwine with synth waves making the portrait come to life, detail after detail, until a complex figure emerges from the white canvas. The constant, unsteady sounds, wavering noise, swirling cymbals, and distant feedback gently pull the listener into the picture, letting them enjoy every detail of this beautifully staged compositions.

Recorded at EMS studio, Stockholm, ZKM in Karlsruhe and at the legendary Funkhaus in Berlin, this album mixes influences from both Italian minimalism and the electro-acoustic contemporary scene. Somewhere in between the electronics of Keith Fullerton Whitman, the percussive repetitions of Jon Mueller, and the atmospheric sensibility of Pan-American.

Despite his status as a key figure in the history of Japanese ambient music, Hiroshi Yoshimura's music remains tragically under-known outside of his home country. Empire of Signs – a new imprint co-helmed by Maxwell August Croy and Spencer Doran – is proud to reissue Yoshimura's debut Music for Nine Postcards for the first time outside Japan in collaboration with Hiroshi's widow Yoko Yoshimura, with more fully licensed reissues of Hiroshi's work to follow in the future.

Working initially as a conceptual artist, the musical side of Yoshimura's artistic practice came to prominence in the post-Fluxus scene of late 1970s Tokyo alongside Akio Suzuki and Takehisa Kosugi, taking many subsequent turns within Japan’s bubble economy afterward. His sound works took on many forms - commissioned fashion runway scores, soundtracking perfume, soundscapes for pre-fab houses, train station sound design - all existing not as side work but as logical extensions of his philosophy of sound. His work strived for serenity as an ideal, and this approach can be felt strongly on Music for Nine Postcards.

Home recorded on a minimal setup of keyboard and Fender Rhodes, Music for Nine Postcards was Yoshimura’s first concrete collection of music, initially a demo recording given to the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art to be played within the building's architecture. This was not mere background music in the prior Japanese “BGM” sense of the word, but “environmental” music, the literal translation of the Japanese term kankyō ongaku [環境音楽] given to Brian Eno’s “ambient” music when it arrived in late 70's Japan. Yoshimura, along with his musical co-traveler Satoshi Ashikawa, searched for a new dialog between sound and space, a new way of listening: sound not as an absolute, but as something that interlocks with a physical environment and shifts the listener’s experience within it. Erik Satie's furniture music, R. Murray Schafer's concept of the soundscape and Eno’s ambience all greatly informed their work,  but the specific form of tranquil stasis presented on releases like Nine Postcards is still difficult to place within a specific tradition, remaining elusive and idiosyncratic despite the economy of it's construction. This record offers the perfect introduction to Hiroshi's unique and beautiful worldview: it's one that can be listened to - and lived in - endlessly.

We are excited to premiere Go See by Joe Armon-Jones. Joe delivers a playful, improvisatory approach, showcasing everything he has learned on his musical journey so far. Full of ad-libs and stunning solos, the piece is almost hypnotic in its musicality. 

As well as being a founding member of the Ezra Collective he has performed with a wide range of artists from Pharoahe Monch, to ATA KAK, and is a regular fixture in the bands of Nubya Garcia, Idiom, China Moses and Binker Golding Quartet.

LEE YI / DISSIMILAR LAKE PIGMENTS - CLUMSY HANDS

Bartosz Dziadosz and Tomasz Mreńca  are friends and artists from Poland. They started collaborating on musical projects a few years ago, most notably as part of modern classical group The Frozen Vaults which also include Harry Towell, Yuki Murata and Dave Dhonau. This group saw a far flung collaboration with locations including the United Kingdom, Japan as well as Poland and recordings shared over great distance as the project developed.

In ‘Mirage’ and also the recent ‘Black Lake’, the project sees Bartosz and Tomasz collaborate closer to home. Bartosz records solo material as Pleq and works with sound as part of the theatre whereas Tomasz generates sounds on analog synthesisers and violin. Mirage was originally released as a 3 inch CDr via Belgian label Taâlem last year and we’re pleased to present this piece in its remastered state, alongside reworks and interpretations from Spheruleus, Sven Laux and Giulio Aldinucci. Each of these renowned composers were invited to portray the dark, mysterious passages of Mirage in a different light, making for an album experience rather than a simple reissue with ‘remixes’.

Spheruleus selected a looping section of the original strings in a brooding, dramatic piece steeped in tape decay, Sven Laux has focused more on the timbral quality of the strings whereas Giulio Aldinucci sculpts the piece into a dynamic drone which reaches a subtly noise shrouded crescendo. The reworks are followed by the original, in all its glory.

We’re informed that Mirage was inspired by Witold Lutosławski as Bartosz and Tomasz had listened to his work together.
When they set about composing Mirage, they wanted to create this in their image and since they are so used to each other’s company, they did not need to labour into plans and concepts. Instead, the music flowed freely. The concept became the action of creating itself, in a way which etches a description of the artists themselves, for the listener to decode.

Ouvala "Multiperspectivity" is the most-recent handiwork and features nine collaborative pieces, thrown back and forth several times. It is a characteristic of sound, short stories and mystical adventures where both musical perspectives are projected to the listener.

Featuring seven exclusive new tracks, the EP is available both digitally and in a limited edition, one-time-only vinyl pressing of 300 copies to be sold alongside a short, triple-bill UK tour. Both tour and EP feature the same three artists – French pianist / composer Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, Polish cellist Resina and Swedish-Iranian pianist Shida Shahabi, whose debut LP, ‘Homes’, will be released in mid-October.

This is sort of a study of childhood and time - I remember very well going to mass as a child, especially Christmas Eve mass, and it was always nearly tortuous for me. Time would elongate into what seemed like millennia; I would somehow never make it out of church, alive, still a child. I would leave as an adult because I'd be there forever. The ceilings were impossibly high - dizzying, even. The origins of sound and the reverberations they made were bewildering to me. I couldn't believe how huge this place was, and how long this ceremony was. I would drift into a sort of liminal, hypnagogic state as time slowed, and the cantor or singers would sing, the reverb drawing out slowly, forever...

Gabriel's Message

We are proud to announce our last release of this year by øjeRum entitled "A Certain Grief"

"II" is taken from "A Certain Grief" which will be released December 19th.

All sounds were recorded at Paw Gabrowski's (øjeRum) his girlfriends parents house. They live remote in the country side and have a really old pump organ in the living room. It's a really old house and in winter they only heat up this room for special occasions. He recorded this two winters ago in freezing cold, with gloves on and candlelights. All background sounds are the actual sounds that were in the house while recording; the creaking chair, the crackling and pumping of the organ, the everyday noises of the family talking and working in the kitchen next door.
