"While the first few tapes in this series focused their orbit around the Boxed massive, we now turn to those honing in on a skeletal, highly percussive, Jersey-inflected take on grime. Miss Modular and Sudanim of Her Records have presented us with exactly that, for the most part leaving behind grime’s evil sound palette and instead focusing on its relentless structure and searing rhythmic energy. Hailing from South London, the two are joined by Fraxinus and CYPHR to form the core of Her Records, with a variety of releases available here. Seemingly inspired by Jam City’s incredible Club Constructions appearance, Miss Modular and Sudanim (along with Neana and Georgia Girls) have Jersey’s ferocious kick as the pumping pistons in their motor – the engine around which grime’s rapid-fire claps and techno’s mechanic soundscape revolve. While others, such as Neana, display an industrial, factory-in-motion style within a similar framework, Her have taken a more melodic, synth-heavy approach. The result feels, when heard in conjunction with Bok Bok’s RA mix and Neana for the Astral Plane, like a strikingly new sound. It’s crucial that most of the producers featured on this mix had their moments of revelation not at Fantazia or Metalheadz, FWD or Sidewinder, but at Night Slugs and Hyperdub raves, replacing Slimzee pirate tapes with Total Freedom mixes off soundcloud. Hence those, like MM and Sudanim, coming of age during the reign of labels like NS, Hyperdub, Hessle and Livity are schooled in a genreless mess of dance music history rather than a unified sound. Here, kuduro shares the floor with funky, with juke, kwaito, ballroom, bmore, ghetto house, RnB, whatever. As all these musics come together and speak to each other, new ideas, new concoctions, new sounds emerge - this mix is one of them." Tobias Shine

EXCLUSIVE: fitzzgerald - Genius Of Love

We are very pleased to welcome Money $ex Records to our Carhartt WIP Radio channel - a Berlin based label managed by three friends that unite one thing: a love for all kinds of music. Since December 2015 Max Graef, Glenn Astro and Delfonic have released music which has been produced by them and their friends, including Gerry Franke, Tito Wun, C.A. Ramirez, Hodini, IMYRMIND, Dexter or Retrogott amongst others. Their styles are varied - it could be house, it could be jazz, soul, funk, hiphop, trap, or just a thrilling electronic dreamland from a producer’s mind. For Carhartt WIP Radio, DJ and producer Glenn Astro jumped into his private DJ booth and conducted a mix that features the multiple elements of the Money $ex history with a deeply moving, constantly groove story arc.

When The Unbelievable Two appeared on the scene in 2014, their pure underground, analogue boogie and disco sound mirrored what was going on in the vinyl infected bars and small cellar clubs in their hometown of Hamburg/Germany. “The Unbelievable Two” was inspired by the golden age of the genres, played live with skills and insight. Four years later, boogie and disco are all around us. So it is about time that these pioneers release their second album. Honest and authentic, “Power Plant” recalls late 1970s New York Disco and mid 1908s UK Boogie.

The Unbelievable Two still is Mzuzu and Mucka, who lead us through nine new songs of speedy disco, down low boogie and even some smokin’ reggae. Recorded in late 2017 and through the spring of 2018, “Power Plant” tells stories beyond the surface level. “Even though our music is purely instrumental, it doesn’t mean we haven’t got anything to say,” explains Mzuzu, a respected and well-travelled vinyl DJ on the Germany funk/disco scene. “Boogie and disco are a universal language. With the influence of Afro, Latin, Reggae, even European electronic music you do not need a lot of words to tell a story which gets everybody connected. These songs are about our friends, our everyday life, how we life and what we feel.”

Simon Hinter – another gem? We think so! This german music freak has been doing music for many years with some splendid releases on smaller labels like Phil Holland plus being picked for on Osunlade mix CD, but it just recently got bigger with his release on the ever hot Freerange label. Why we like his sound? It’s raw and it got funk! Filtered loops, chunky basslines, catchy melodies? For sure! All 3 orignal tracks are pure Simon Hinter stylee and to give you the extra bonus, Wolf and Quintessentials buddy KRL gets back in action with a fab remix. Yes, we all wanna make love!

Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album ‘Boy’ was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. 

Boy has seen widespread acclaim since its release, with Resident Advisor noting “[his] sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers...his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out…” His latest material is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. 

His machine grooves are fired through a prism of crate-digging influences, from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel and back again. His distinctive synthesiser tones have graced remixes and production for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu and BadBadNotGood. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub. Eclectic and groovy, Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.
