Field Recordings

A phonography trip trough the soundscapes of southeast Toronto, recorded in the spring of 2009. Each location is presented without altering or post studio layering except for the short transitions between them. Headphones recommended or good quality speakers.


Toronto Southeast

Night soundscape recorded by the rail tracks at The Junction, Toronto. A freight train passes by and then coyotes howl in the distance. I recommend to listen with headphones and eyes closed. Wildtronics SAAM microphone system sample recording of a distant bird chorus from Grouse Point in Zaleski State Forest, in Southern Ohio. None of these birds were close. Some of the woodpeckers were deep in a valley and distant. The SAAM system is an extremely low noise stereo microphone specifically designed for field recording.

Un fil di ferro è appeso ad una finestra. La finestra si muove col vento, a ritmo costante. Nell’avanti e dietro del legno, un doppio movimento si crea: l’asse orizzontale dell’anta con l’asse verticale del ferro che graffia la porta. 
La registrazione è stata fatta con microfonazione a contatto, con la piastra attaccata al ferro ad intercettarne l’andamento.

Trying out some new gear- this was recorded during the dawn chorus at Neurum Creek after a night of heavy rain-  lots of dripping and the previously stagnant creek running in the background.

Phonography piece made for the World Listening Day 2011 events presented by New Adventures in Sound Art in its 8 channel version. The soundscapes were recorded using ambisonics and are presented here in a stereo binaural version. Listening with headphones required (over the ear headphones work better than earbuds). Some processing and crossfading done at the transitions but otherwise the recordings are presented in their natural unaltered form. (remastered 2024)

World Listening Day 2011 Toronto Soundscapes

This is a binaural and unedited (other than EQ) single take recording of the NY City subway I did on October 2011. Headphones required to experience the full spatial sound image (over the ear studio style headphones work better than earbuds). This is a long (17 mins.) recording so close your eyes, relax and let the constantly changing sound environments carry you. (Improved version updated on July 30, 2012)

Il s’agit du cycle complet d’une journée entière ramenée à une demi-heure, enregistrée dans la péninsule de Crimée au cours d’un voyage solitaire durant l’été 2018.  L’activité sonore des insectes(principalement grillons et cigales) est indexée sur la température ambiante : elle est un marqueur sensoriel de l’environnement et une horloge biologique. Cette pièce a d'abord été conçue pour une installation en octophonie.

Yulia Glukhova (née en 1989) est une artiste sonore basée à Moscou. Son domaine d’intérêt comprend la musique électronique expérimentale, l’art technologique et le Field Recording (l’enregistrement sur le terrain).
