Philadelphia DJs lil'dave (Illvibe Collective) and Personify (Little Big Things) have joined forces to bring you Gotcha Covered - a genre bending mega-mix of covers songs from the mid-60s to the present. With more than 35 years of DJing and music collecting between them, these fellas dug deep in their collections to pull tracks for Gotcha Covered and spent months mixing, cutting and blending together more than 90 covers spanning Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, Latin, Bossa Nova, Boogaloo, Reggae, Steel-Drum Band, Brass Band, R&B and Hip-Hop, to name a few. From the super rare to the under-appreciated and forgotten to the more common cover versions, Gotcha Covered offers up something for the serious digger and the casual listener alike. Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. Nu-Mark began DJing at the age of 13 in Los Angeles. Over the last two decades, he has amassed an immense collection of rare records from around the world.  Nu-Mark’s refined music production and live showmanship regard him as one of the most innovative DJ’s in music culture.
 
As a member of the critically acclaimed, gold-selling Hip-Hop outfit, Jurassic 5, DJ Nu-Mark graced the group with precision production and cutting edge stage routines.  Best known for his production on the raw anthem “What’s Golden” such creativity only hinted at his imagination since Jurassic 5’s breakup in 2006.  In 2013, J5 reunited with a staggering performance at Coachella which featured a gigantic turntable designed and manipulated by Nu-Mark.
 
Nu introduced himself as a solo artist in 2004 with Blend Crafters, an instrumental EP created in the spirit of allowing beats to speak for themselves.  Later that year Hands On, was released as a mix CD that featured Mc’s rhyming in different languages from around the world.    He has remixed songs for Nas & Damian Marley, created tracks for Saturday Night Live’s Lonely Island and constructed the Tropical Funk mix Take Me With You.  Most significantly, after more than three years of brainstorming, experimenting and collaborating, he’s released his critically acclaimed debut album Broken Sunlight, which reveals his influences and innovations into a jaw dropping collection of heart felt music featuring Aloe Blacc, Charles Bradley, Quantic, Large Professor, Bumpy Knuckles, A-Skillz, Tiron & Ayomari and J-Live.
 
Recently Nu-Mark has been widely recognized for filling his entire stage with children’s music toys and playing them as instruments. This Kids Toy Set went viral when Nu-Mark compiled his performances from around the world in his DVD Nu-Conduit.
 
To date, Nu-Mark has been featured in the critically acclaimed documentaries Scratch, KeepinTime, Coachella: The Movie,Rock the Bells – The Documentary and Mac Grubber.  In 2013 Nu-Mark created original beats and co-scored both Battle Of The Year starring Chris Brown and Ride Along staring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.
 
Today Nu-Mark has completed a collaborative album with Slimkid3 of Pharcyde which features songs that include Murs, Del, Diamond D, Darondo and J-Live, set to be released on Delicious Vinyl in the summer of 2014.  Stay tuned!

Starting off as a 35 minute competition entry for the 2017 Shindig festival, I decided to extend the mix with some of the toughest, baddest F. U. N. K. breaks in my collection, resulting in a worthy follow up to the 'Raw Elements (Part One)' tape I dropped earlier this year.

Part Two is a tribute to all the current day DJs and acts that have inspired me over the past two decades; people like Boca 45, Smoove, Jorun Bombay, Jim Sharp, DJ Format, Nick Bike, Southpaw Chop, Marc Hype, Paul Nice, Phil Most Chill, Freqnik & WDRE, Soopasoul (and of course the pioneers before them).

Nothing overly technical going on here, just an hour and a bit of booming funk, neck-snapping beats and b-boy breaks.

Heavy Stylus: An explosive amalgamation of Jamaican roots, hip hop beats, heavy soul breaks and blaxploitation ghetto-funk.

I’ve been rocking funk/soul/beats/hiphop/roots for around 20 years in various bars and clubs across the South West, and have supported a wide range of acts and artists such including Jelly Jazz, Boca 45, Andy Smith, Quantic, Craig Charles, DJ Food, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Ugly Duckling and DJ Format.

Although I started as a vinyl-only DJ in Bristol, these days I use a pair of battle-scarred Pioneer CDJs as my weapons of choice. I’m currently a resident (of 11 years) at the Angel Bar on Queen Street, and in the past have held Exeter-based residencies at The Monkey Suit, Timepiece, Dr. Inks and Verve (now Urban Underground), as well as DJing regularly for Hold it Down.
