Live recording, warts and all, captured live from my short set on Saturday night at Hatherleigh Carnival (I was filling in between the two bands whilst they sound checked).

I'm used to playing 4-5 hour sets, so this mix was quite challenging to put together, trying to smash through 17 tracks across multiple genres (hip-hop/disco/funk/house) within 40 minutes, with the additional requirement of keeping it family friendly.

Being a bit of a perfectionist, I don't often like to post 100% live recordings (the occasional beat slip, level changes or lazy cut ends up bugging me on later listens) but I was pretty happy how this one turned out. Just like my homework as a kid, I left recording this competition entry to pretty much the last minute after first seeing it advertised months ago! Recorded straight from the decks with no post production, this is as raw as it gets - 30 minutes of bassbin-booming old school hip hop block party jams, with a few recent edits thrown in for good measure. On and on till the break a dawn!

Heavy Stylus - Altitude Festival DJ Compo Entry 2022

'Freak the Funk' is an extended re-recording of the interval mix I played at 2022's Hatherleigh Carnival between the two sets played by local indie rockers 'The Wreckords'. DJing after a band is always a challenge, especially if you're a hip hop DJ facing a crowd that have been whipped up into a frenzy by a band playing uptempo classic indie covers for the past hour. Unprepared and desperately flicking through my box looking for an accessible launch record, I pulled out Jimi Hendrix's 'Crosstown Traffic' and its sample borrowing UK cousin 'I'm Ready', before cutting into the Nas classic 'Hip Hop is Dead' and War's 'Me and Baby Brother'. From that point I was on a roll - working through a stack of raw 60s r&b and funk before breaking back into hip hop with 45 Live's release of the previously lost Outlaw Posse cut 'Living in Hackney', purely selected because after a few pints 'Hackney' sounds not too dissimilar to 'Hath'leigh', twisting the track into an unintentional rural anthem!

I've no doubt that the majority of the dancers would have preferred a straight-up indie rock set, but by the time I dropped Daytoner's Wiseguys-apeing 'Ooh Lalo' they were well and truly won over. And then the band came on again and smashed it out of the park.

Anyway, I'd been working on the bar all evening prior to my set and was a few pints in myself, so I couldn't recall exactly what else I played during the intermission, but this mix pretty much covers what I do remember. Although I'm pretty sure I dropped Back by Dope Demand, White Lines and Super Fly at some point, which didn't make it into this version. Recorded straight from the mixer in a single take for that authentic live vibe, raw and uncut, this is rock 'n' roll soul!

(I thought I'd already uploaded this mix back in 2020, but it looks like I forgot - so here it is now, nearly three years late!)

With three kids and a demanding job, finding the time to organise and record a mix at home has become near impossible. That is, until the world got shut down thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Silver linings and all that.

Inspired by my recent gig at Exeter's best-in-beer-n-beats 'Angel Bar', I've tried to capture the sweaty, bassbin-booming, sticky-floored vibe of the night by re-recording an early part of my four-hour set; a mix of infectious funk, dirty soul, crackly beats and heavyweight hip hop complete with loose scratches, rough live looping and *I'm-having-way-too-much-fun* turntable spin-backs.

Peace to all my fellow Angel Bar residents and crew; Benji's Reggae Bus, Buggin' Out, Fajita Funk, Freddy Pimms, Gwarn Owl, Jef Showbiz, King Farmer, Kourosh, OMC, Sidilicious, Spider, Wax On/Wax Off and Will G!

(The sub-heading 'Live at the Angel' is a cheeky reference to the 'Live at The Social' mixtapes from the 1990's. Although it was recorded in a single session with minimal post-editing to keep it sounding as raw as possible, it's equally about as 'live' as its namesake. Don't even trip!)

A Golden Era Of Hip Hop Vol 2(MIX ONLY)

'Can’t, Won’t, Don’t Stop' is more than just a mix - it’s a tribute to 25 years behind the decks.

From block party breaks to neck-snapping boom-bap, this hour-long session cuts deep into the DNA of funk, hip-hop, and sample-heavy soul. Expect a hard-hitting mix packed with golden-era grit, b-boy breaks and underground heat.

Every one of these 26 tracks tells a story. They've rocked sweaty basements, backrooms, festival tents and city dive bars with sticky dancefloors. They’ve provided the soundtrack to late-night drives through Devon’s country lanes and dusty-fingered digging excursions in Bristol and record shops further afield.

Consider this a snapshot. A rewind. A love letter to the culture that made me the DJ and record collector I am today.  At 46 years old, I still can’t stop, won’t stop - and don’t plan to anytime soon.

JD Green , a former exotic dancer turned truck driver, moonlighting as a D.J. named Dustin Funkman started djing nearly two decades ago under a few different names. Mainly under the name Scratche, having many releases on various labels (Promo Records, Breaks R Boss, Base Industry Records, Champion Beats) & More. Shifting gears into something a little bit different but still in the breaks genre. With his first release on Bassment Tapes Records, his remix release of Fitzgerald's Excuses has been well received. For Hip Hop Corner mix Vol.18, Wood n Soo chose to make a tribute to one of their favorite television shows - HBO’s Silicon Valley. Aside from being a hilarious and smartly written show, SV has an amazing soundtrack that has never been compiled into album format. Using only their favourite songs that were featured in the show (plus some choice dialogue clips), they cleverly crafted an homage that even the uninitiated will enjoy.
So over all you intertwine these two extremely dope turntablists with a solid splash of humour and you've got your self one hell of a good mixtape.

The Lampshade Chronicles

So after months of careful preparation and hours of digging I bring to you the final instalment of my Golden Era Hip Hop series Vol 3. This mix I spent longer on and rather than give you interviews with legends of the scene I have delivered an extra 15 minutes of classics. It has been one of my favorite pieces of work compiling these mixes and no expense is spared into finding all those hidden gems. Funk Ferret - Classic 90s HipHop Mix - Part 1

Starting off as a 35 minute competition entry for the 2017 Shindig festival, I decided to extend the mix with some of the toughest, baddest F. U. N. K. breaks in my collection, resulting in a worthy follow up to the 'Raw Elements (Part One)' tape I dropped earlier this year.

Part Two is a tribute to all the current day DJs and acts that have inspired me over the past two decades; people like Boca 45, Smoove, Jorun Bombay, Jim Sharp, DJ Format, Nick Bike, Southpaw Chop, Marc Hype, Paul Nice, Phil Most Chill, Freqnik & WDRE, Soopasoul (and of course the pioneers before them).

Heavy Stylus: An explosive amalgamation of Jamaican roots, hip hop beats, heavy soul breaks and blaxploitation ghetto-funk.

I’ve been rocking funk/soul/beats/hiphop/roots for around 20 years in various bars and clubs across the South West, and have supported a wide range of acts and artists such including Jelly Jazz, Boca 45, Andy Smith, Quantic, Craig Charles, DJ Food, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Ugly Duckling and DJ Format.

Although I started as a vinyl-only DJ in Bristol, these days I use a pair of battle-scarred Pioneer CDJs as my weapons of choice. I’m currently a resident (of 11 years) at the Angel Bar on Queen Street, and in the past have held Exeter-based residencies at The Monkey Suit, Timepiece, Dr. Inks and Verve (now Urban Underground), as well as DJing regularly for Hold it Down.
