A Collision of Events

This is a remix recording, with added instruments,  of an instrumental I shared some years back.

It was my tribute to Clifford T. Ward (1944-2001), a talented & underrated British singer-songwriter.  He recorded ten plus studio albums but only made the UK singles chart twice with “Gaye” & “Scullery”.   It was said that he would have had more commercial success were it not for his dislike of touring, public appearances, interviews etc.   His songs are on Spotify should anyone is interested.

This is my final entry of the year and will certainly share more music next year.

Long lost disco version of the classic track "Stay Cool" — finally rescued from the vaults!
Once believed to have been lost forever, this shimmering Billy Noknees Disco Demo emerges from the dust-covered archives like a neon ghost from Studio 54. Originally tracked during the legendary 1975 Atlantic Records demo sessions, the tape was quietly shelved after label execs shrugged and muttered, “nobody’s ready for this groove.” History proved them wrong.

Now, decades later, professionally remastered from the original reels, this rough-and-funky take reveals Noknees at his most experimental — loose basslines, swirling strings, handclaps that slap like chrome, and a vocal so smooth it could ice a cocktail. The world finally gets to hear what they missed. A time capsule. A fever dream. A disco comet blazing across the night.

The groove has returned. Stay cool — or get left behind.

This song began with Chris composing it with his synth, guitar, drum pad and bass. Like many of his songs, it was pretty well formed before the rest of the group got a hold of it. This song was part of a load of songs he shared with the rest of Eclectic Collective all at once. We've been picking them off one by one, though, as we're always grateful to Chris for sharing his magic with us.
  The odd sound of the rhythmic melody, which uses chromatic walks, immediately caught Josh's ears. It struck him as something the Doors might have come up with. So, he set about replacing Chris' simple bass line with something fancier, as well as coming up with the lead guitar for the whole thing, and the lyrics and vocals, as well. Josh was really taken with this one, and heard all kinds of parts in it almost immediately. Ken went to bat next, adding his innovative, John Densmore-like drums to it, replacing Chris' initial rhythmic idea. JJ came next and added the essential piano you hear throughout. After that, Mark found a place for his amazing bassoon/harpsicord solo in the middle. But before it was all over, Chris also added some doubled vocals, too, to actualize the lyrics, which are about two friends taking an acid trip together. 
  After it was all laid down, we asked Tez to mix it for us, which he did in his expert fashion, as always.
  This is our latest song composed by Chris, and we love working on his music. If you dig this, you should pay his page a visit, too, as it's full of diamonds. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This is a song that Josh and his cousin Paul came up with on Thanksgiving night, after everyone went to bed. They were working on a much longer composition, but got stuck in the jam after looking at each other and wordlessly saying, "this is the magic, stick with it." We were playing an electric guitar and a stand-up bass to a looper disco beat when we recorded this. So, of course, Josh asked Ken if he'd add some real drums, which he did as though he were in the room jamming with us. Then josh laid down some organ to go with the jam. Chris even popped by to do that thrilling intro guitar part. Josh and Stephen also had the idea to add some banjo in here, which Stephen did like the excellent musician he is. He also managed to mix this live recording hybrid with exceptional skill. 
  This is an example of two musicians who are intimately familiar with each other, and each other's playing and sensibilities, accompanied by two other musicians who have become nearly as familiar over the past few years. Happy belated Turkey Day to everyone. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
