It's September. I'm at Portmerion. It's the day after Festival No 6, hot, bright, some kind of perfect. I walk in the sun, on the peninsular, alone, and have this feeling that turns into a sort of dream poem that turns into a song. Strings are by Cheiko, we met in Japan at Yasushi's store. She transformed an idea into a beautiful reality.

Oh shit. This is bad. I’m not wrong, they’re wrong. Ouch this hurts. I wish this wasn’t this way. Why does everyone hate me? I hate everyone. I am dreading going to this place. I wish I never dated that person. They’re probably talking shit about me.  I should be doing better by my age. I haven’t done anything with my life. No one loves me. I look like shit.

These are the voices of worry, shame, fear, regret, pain of various forms – the loops that play out and push us to solve for x or act according to x.  This is when you can’t find your way out of a situation and instead your life just gets smogged over by the situation: when you know that something is wrong and because of it, you feel terrible inside. Life suddenly loses its highlights.  You ask for advice, you work on plans to overcome it, you wish on it, pray on it, lament it, replay it, try to aggressively work on alleviating it, or you hide from it and numb it. And it thickens. It’s the one thing that really catalyzes a whole lot of other beliefs – and you can’t seem to figure out a workaround.  When an emotion sticks inside us it CONTROLS US and often pushes us to act on its behalf – like a little demon with a joystick inside your brain. 

So if this sounds vaguely familiar, this is an episode for you. There are three parts – the what, the why, and the how  - the tools! In line with the release of Blackfilm's new album "Zero One Seven", Denovali releases the 2010 collaboration masterpiece "Along the Corridor" with Eraldo Bernocchi for the first time on vinyl and digital format.

Italy’s heavy dub producer Eraldo Bernocchi is not a new face to the scene. Starting out his career in the 90s, Bernocchi produced under many aliases. [...] But it is the works under his real name that deserve the most attention. In 1999 he released Charged with Tashinori Kondo and Bill Laswell. In 2005 he appeared alongside Harold Budd in Music For ‘Fragments From The Inside’ on Sub Rosa. And in 2007 he recorded Manual together with Thomas Fehlmann for 21st Records. There are also numerous EPs with Bill Laswell under Apollo‘s Re-charged series. [...]

Blackfilm, who continues to remain anonymous, is a Hungarian artist that was first introduced to us through his self-titled debut on the now defunct Spectraliquid Records. Since then, the album has been picked up by Denovali Records and repressed in 2010 on compact disc and vinyl. His dark atmospheric soundscapes and a bricolage of modern classical samples and instrumental hip-hop beats reminded me of my favorite works by Amon Tobin and Future Sound of London, for a brooding soundtrack enveloping your mind with heavy fog of penetrating sound. Since the release, Blackfilm has relocated to London where he has embedded himself with the heavyweights of dub and even darker journeys in the underground ... [...]" Headphone Commute

Ellicist are Thomas Chousos & Florian Zimmer. Chousos studied composition in Greece before moving to Berlin, where he is working as a producer and sound engineer under the moniker Tadklimp. Florian Zimmer has been playing with several groups. Besides Ellicist he is a member of Saroos and Driftmachine.

Featuring field recordings from the Australian bush alongside synths, vocals and binaural beats, Wylah is a deeply emotive piece, inspired by the devastating bushfires that are sweeping across the country.  

“This piece came from a conversation I had with a Wylah (Yellow-tailed Black Cocktatoo) one afternoon in the forest. I had been hunting sounds all morning and was losing hope of getting anything worthwhile, so I was packing up to go home. I had almost reached the car park when two Wylahs appeared from nowhere and began chatting with me from the branches above. It was quite magical. I can’t explain how or why but I just knew they were talking to me. Asking me to record them and share their message.”

In Aboriginal tradition, the Black Cockatoo has a significant place. It is a beautiful, graceful bird with an unmistakable but somewhat mournful call. They represent change and enlightenment and herald the coming of rain. They are also believed to be the guides and guardians of the spirits of loved ones on their journey to rest amongst the Ancestors. (source: http://www.ngaoara.org.au/story)

Achingly beautiful, yet subtle, this song represents the ending. Mother nature’s mournful cry. The devastation. And the empty silence at the end.
