Tim Hecker was beyond AMAZING, played in pitch black darkness with about 5 candles lit behind the stage - this recording is not the best and doesn't even come close to the experience of been there. 

Pete Swanson also blew my mind (and my eardrums) with his Techno noise fest that was so noisy and abrasive it became relaxing, I purchased one of his tapes :D Vessel was good (lovely bass) but we arrived halfway through his set so I didn't get the whole picture.

2014 has welcomed Kevin Saunderson and Damon Albarn to the FACT Mix controls – but the man behind mix 459 is arguably the most storied mixer of the year so far. 

Craig Leon’s CV as a producer is about as distinguished as they come; in fact, our 100 best albums of the 1970s list would look very different without him. The Florida native was a pivotal figure in the US punk and new wave scenes, manning the controls on early singles from the Ramones and Blondie. Production credits include Suicide’s game-changing 1977 debut LP, Richard Hell and the Voidoids’ Blank Generation, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce’s Flamingo.

He’s also forged an impressive, if lesser-known, career as a recording artist. His 1981 solo debut Nommos, a skittering collection of processed percussive tattoos and wonky electronics, is an out-and-out classic, and we duly ranked Superior Viaduct’s (unauthorized) edition as our favourite reissue of 2013. Other releases include 1982’s Waiting and a collaborative LP with Arthur Baker. His solo work’s been spotlit once again this year: a definitive new RVNG release, Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1, presents a spruced-up, alternative version of Nommos, painstakingly re-recorded from Leon’s original studio notes and bundled alongside a remastered version of Waiting.

Leon’s spent much of the last 25 years working on modern classical releases, and his FACT mix draws from that milieu, blending drone, gamelan, krautrock and microtonal work. It’s gorgeous, and features a sprinkling of unreleased works to boot. Bernard Parmegiani, Annette Peacock, Tony Conrad and George Gerschwin all feature.

Map 165 is a collaboration between Martin A Smith and Tim Hooper exploring disorganised sound, atonality, beauty and evocation. Following on from 2014’s The Fatigue of Sunlight and Wine (Voxxov) and their collection of live recordings A Foreign Country, we are pleased to announce the release of their latest album Of Adam Sleeping in the Lap of God. 

An ambient work in four movements inspired by the north portico of Chartres cathedral Of Adam Sleeping in the Lap of God melts stone into music using a series of field recordings, synths and guitars. 

Of Heaven and earth: 
The formless becomes formed. A swirling coalescence of themes and sounds. Through repetition a pattern appears. Order is created. Across a slow shimmering, four notes call out bridging the void. 

The deepest midnight blue 
The sound from the lowest point of the lake 
The silence of the space above the Earth 
The beat of the heart 

Of the firmament: 
A blissful disorientation. Shimmering, confusing, a wrapping inwards of time and rhythm with multiple refraction of the same themes overlaid but still apparent. 

It is the clangour of bells reflected off stone walls in an old town 
It is the beat of wings over a lake 
It is the confusion of walking in to a dark interior out of the brilliant sunshine 
It is the clamour of foreign languages in the market place 

Of the Sun and the Moon: 
Reflective and contemplative, with a receding sadness. Watching the last sun of Summer set knowing that Winter will be coming. 

Wind between the fingers of trees 
Dust settling in corners until Spring 
Hands resting upon the table 
Valleys filled with fine rain 

Of Eden: 
Neither afraid of night or morning. Each day welcomed; each day passing as easily as water in a river. The security of knowing what you like and trusting your judgement. Equal with all, afraid of none. Night comes blissfully again. 

The comfort of time passing 
The first moment of sleep 
Closing the door once home 
A friend’s voice

From the Mouth of the Sun (aka Aaron Martin & Dag Rosenqvist) return with ‘Sleep Stations,’ an EP of six new songs, out May 18th, 2018 on Lost Tribe Sound. ’Sleep Stations’ rests comfortably alongside 2017’s ‘Hymn Binding’ their third full-length album and their original score for Joshua Z. Weinstein’s feature film, ‘Menashe.’ With ‘Sleep Stations’ the duo assures us that their exquisite palette of classical leaning, electro-acoustics reaped from their previous albums still leaves much to be explored.

In fact, the pieces of ‘Sleep Stations’ were composed during many of the same sessions as ‘Hymn Binding’ and ‘Menashe,’ yet they feel like a natural continuation of From the Mouth of the Sun’s sound, a stepping stone towards the next chapter, if you will. The core sound will be instantly recognizable for those who’ve followed their previous endeavors, comprised of cello, piano, acoustic guitars, lap steel, banjo, ukulele, pump organ, soft humming electronics and warm layer of static.

The title track ‘Sleep Stations’ was originally meant to be included on the album ‘Hymn Binding.’ It acted as a centerpiece and starting point for the music that From the Mouth of the Sun recorded later during the process of scoring the ‘Menashe’ film. The film ended up requiring an extremely spare palette, thus the ‘Sleep Stations’ EP represents a longing for a fuller and more controlled sound that exhibits the dynamic range that From the Mouth of the Sun strive for with their work.

There is a softness and detachment to ‘Sleep Stations’ more so, that seems to give the album an of aerial view of the landscape below. Where ‘Hymn Binding’ felt more grounded in the earth and soil, ‘Sleep Stations’ floats high above, feeling weightless, suspended in slow motion flight.

Arranging ‘Sleep Stations’ as an EP, has allowed Aaron and Dag to tell a shorter story, one that doesn’t have to be such a grand gesture, which is something they’ve wanted to explore for a while now. It’s a beautiful reminder, that a collection of music can still be simple yet deeply affecting, without being overwrought and excessive.

CASSETTE DETAILS
‘Sleep Stations,’ our 3rd installment in the Dead West Tape Series, arrives on a limited pro-dubbed hi-bias tape cassette, housed in a reverse printed 300gsm heavy stock outer case. The edition (limited to 100) also comes with a download card offering a choice of formats including FLAC, 320K MP3, etc. Mastering was performed by Matthew Collings (aka one half of the duo Graveyard Tapes).

In Light not Light, as the titles suggest, each track could be, or not be, each draws a scenario where the listener is the subject, and the composer has already completed his task. 
The sound, too, comes from an instrument (classical guitar) that is no longer itself, shaped and transformed by electronics into its future projection. Sometimes you can find traces of natural sounds, as if to preserve a connection with the original idea, sometimes I inserted some field recordings, as little suggestions.

In this second album Sunrise have evolved from the purely electronic by adding many acoustic elements. Live guitars and hand drums add to this soundscape along side the usual range of synthetic sounds you have come to expect from the Sunrise duo. The music has more feeling and the compositions have more subtle complexities. The shifts in style and mood from one track to the next leaves your ears refreshed and open to the unexpected. Sunrise have definitely bettered themselves!
