Our Fallen Heroes was composed by Joseph S. Peckham in 1894. It was performed by the "President's Own" United States Marine Corps Band in the funeral procession for President John F. Kennedy.

Our Fallen Heroes

Joseph S. Peckham composed "Our Fallen Comrade" in 1887. The funeral march was dedicated to Avery W. Hayes, who was the bandmaster of the U.S.S. New Hampshire, a training ship stationed at the Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island. Hayes died in Newport in 1882.

Joseph S. Peckham was an original member of the band at the Naval Training Station in Newport and an active musician throughout the city.

The Crescent Park March was composed by Joseph S. Peckham in 1896. Crescent Park was an amusement park in Riverside that was open from 1886 to 1979. The Looff Carousel, installed at the park in 1895 is still in use today.

Crescent Park March, 1896 by PECKHAM, JOSEPH 
(1849-1904) 
Joseph Sanford Peckham, a native Aquidneck Islander, was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on February 1, 1849. Never venturing far from Newport and the nearby towns of Middleport and Portsmouth, he was educated in Newport schools. As a resident of that historic seacoast city, he became active in its community activities. He was a devout member of the Channigg Memorial Church and for many years was the choirmaster and sang bass in its male quartet. He served as a member of the Newport Naval Training Station Band from the time of its organization until he died.

The major interests of Peckham's life were music and composing, and he earned his livelihood from this. He composed much music, including a number of marches. Many of the marches were named for military, fraternal, or veterans' organizations in the Newport area. On November 27, 1904, Peckham died at his home after suffering a seizure resulting from Bright's disease. He was laid to rest at Island Cemetery in Newport.

Performed during the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth II (and for many other members of the royal family including King Edward II, the Queen Mother, and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh).

Joseph S. Peckham composed his Right of the Line March in 1891. At this time, Peckham was serving in the band stationed on the U.S.S. Richmond at the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island.
