The commercialisation of sport through history (Ep7 - Sport and Ireland: A History)

Maddalena Marinari is Associate Professor in History at Gustavus College in Minnesota. Maddalena has published extensively on immigration restriction and immigrant mobilization. 

She is the author of Unwanted: Italian and Jewish Mobilization Against Restrictive Immigration Laws, 1882-1965, which came out in 2020 with University of North Carolina Press, and provides the foundation for much of the discussion in this episode since it focuses on US opposition to Italian and Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century and outlines how Italian and Jewish communities in the US responded. 

Something that also informed the discussion is a special issue of the Journal of American History from 2022 that Maddalena co-edited with Erika Lee on the Immigration Act of 1924, which saw the US introduce an immigration quota system that substantially restricted immigration until the mid-1960s. Maddelena also co-edited, with Maria Cristina Garcia and Madeline Hsu, A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered: U.S. Society in an Age of Restriction, 1924-1965 and she has a second related co-edited anthology coming out in 2023 with Maria Cristina Garcia titled Whose America? U.S. Immigration Policy since 1980 with the University of Illinois Press. 

Maddelena is also one of the scholars behind the excellent #ImmigrationSyllabus, an online tool for anyone interested in understanding the history behind current debates on immigration in the US.

Maddalena Marinari - Unwanted: American restrictionism and Italian and Jewish immigrants, 1882-1924

Dr Irial Glynn is Assistant Professor at the School of History, University College Dublin. He was recently awarded a €2m ERC Consolidator Grant for his study, SOS, which will investigate the history of boat refugees since the 1940s, asking who hinders and who helps asylum seekers on their journeys, and why.

1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - Holocaust Education Ireland November Pogrom Lecture

To mark the date of the November Pogrom, Dr. Mark Jones gave a lecture - ‘1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - in association with Holocaust Education Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The lecture took place on Tuesday 7 November in Trinity College Dublin.

1923 was Hitler’s breakthrough year. From the end of 1922 up to the infamous Beerhall Putsch in Munich during the night of 8-9 November, the Nazi Party grew from around 8,000 to over 50,000 members. In this lecture, historian Mark Jones examined the history of the year 1923 through the prism of antisemitic violence. 

In this talk you will learn about individual and collective acts of physical violence against Jews, the state-led deportation of Jews from Bavaria, and the role played by antisemitism in Hitler’s attempts to destroy German democracy a decade before he was appointed Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

Mark Jones is Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Tübingen and the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence and has held visiting fellowships at the Free University of Berlin and Bielefeld University. The author of 1923: The Forgotten Crisis in the Year of Hitler’s Coup, he is among the leading English-language historians of modern Germany and a recognized authority on the history of the Weimar Republic.

Dr Siobhán Ní Bhriain graduated from UCD Medicine in 1991. Dr Ní Bhriain trained in Medicine and Psychiatry in the UK and Ireland. She worked as a Research Fellow in the Mercer’s Institute for Research on Ageing before completing her Higher Specialist Training in Old Age and General Adult Psychiatry.

She has worked in Tallaght University Hospital/CHO 7 as Consultant in Psychiatry of Later Life since 2006 and was Clinical Director at the Tallaght and St. James’s Mental Health Services for many years.

She took up the post of NCAGL for Mental Health in January 2019 and moved to the role of National Clinical Lead for Integrated Care, Clinical Design and Innovation in February 2020. The move coincided with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and Siobhán led the development of the ‘HSE Operational Pathways of Care for Covid-19’ for the Chief Clinical Officer. She chairs the Covid Clinical Advisory Group to the CCO, as well as participating in many other Covid and non-Covid related working groups, including the National Public Health Emergency Team.

Siobhán Ní Bhriain - National Clinical Lead for Integrated Care HSE (UCD Class of 1991)

Podcasts recorded at the Health, Illness and Ethnicity: Migration, Discrimination and Social Dislocation Workshop which took place IN UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland on 10-11 June 2011.

This two-day workshop focused on the relationship between illness, migration, discrimination and social dislocation primarily during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It explored the relationship between historical concerns surrounding health and ethnicity, and current health practices and policy. The workshop contributes to debates on the susceptibility of specific groups to medical interventions, as well as interpretations of the relationship between health and illness, migration and ethnicity. We considered how the medical management of specific ethnic groups intersected with broader health and welfare strategies. By migration, we refer to migration between countries and internal movements of populations, for example between regions or from rural to urban areas. The workshop explored the experiences of particular groups, be these ‘foreigners’, migratory peoples, patients of varied religious denominations and those suffering from particular disorders or diseases.

It was the second event associated with the Wellcome Trust project ‘Madness, Migration and the Irish in Lancashire, c.1850-1921’.
