For many this is the ultimate Disco Illusion; a record that should have been epoch making in its day, something that would have been a staple for David Mancuso, Larry Levan & Ron Hardy had it ever gotten distribution when it was originally released 34 years ago. Somehow time passed it by and it was only re-discovered in a warehouse in Trinidad last year. Since then it has been gaining momentum fast, with DJ support from Moodymann, MCDE, Floating Points & Kon, as well as original copies selling for four-digit sums. Part of the illusion is in the structure of the record. The A-side begins with a beautiful hazy disco song, but suddenly an Egyptian sounding bridge turns things inside out and the song opens up into stripped back proto-house jam complete with bubbling Sun Ra synths and Black Ark tape delay action. Then there’s the b-side, which sounds like Bob James after he had a taste of callaloo, with deep electronics and a mind-melting steel pan solo.

The Chicago based Perpetual Rhythms label head honchos Chicagodeep and Taelue present their personal works here on a 2x12" gatefold release comprised of two solo EPs from each. After releasing tracks on their own, as well as on labels such as Minuendo, Boe Recordings, and Rough House Rosie, they bring to the forefront their brand of house, techno, and electronic music with Metaphoric Expressions. A1 "Metaphoric Interlude" premiered here is a first class melancholic house jam and a perfect album starter. Out late June !

Mr. G returns to his own Phoenix G label next week (Tuesday 8th November) with 10-track album ‘A Good Place…?’. We’ve got the exclusive premiere of ‘One For The Headz’ from it above.

With a career spanning over 25 years, Mr. G – real name Colin McBean – has steadily established himself at the top table of electronic music, seeing a renaissance through a string of full-length albums and his effervescent live show in recent years.

He’s had a prolific year of production in 2016 too, with releases on Defected, Midnight Shift and Bass Culture, amongst others, the latter with his emotive cut, ‘Transient’.

‘A Good Place…?’ is made up of robust and moody music built from depth-charged basslines, rattling hi-hats and funk-fueled samples, resulting in 10-tracks of his trademark muscular hypnosis.

Our premiere ‘One For The Headz’ has been one of the biggest tracks on the DJ Mag office stereo this year, thanks to its rhythmic and percussive intricacy — it's a superb broken beat weapon primed for the dancefloor.

Speaking about the album, McBean said, “This was a real surprise as I thought I was done doing another one for a good while, but I’m not complaining. Funnily enough, I started writing this after some horrid treatment at a gig, but after the things I’ve been through over the last few years just being alive is a great place for me – each day and a God blessed bonus.”
