Former 'prison wife' Josie Bevan confronts the failings of the prison system.

Josie meets her husband Rob at the prison gates, after he's served four-and-a-half years of a nine year sentence for fraud. She takes stock of where the experience of his incarceration has left her and the family, and the dramatic ways it has impacted her understanding of how the criminal justice system in the UK works - or doesn't work.

Josie introduces Rob to Carl Cattermole, who wrote Prison: A Survival Guide following his own term in Wormwood Scrubs.  She talks with former prison governor Peter Dawson, who is now director of the Prison Reform Trust, about how honest public discourse is about prison and she meets Dave Merritt, whose son Jack was working with former prisoners when he was killed in a terror attack at Fishmongers' Hall, London in November 2019.

#2 - Why Sound? What might heightened listening offer?

Last week (#1) I introduced Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening practices
and R. Murray Schafer and ear cleaning practices. This week we will further explore what focussing on sound and listening might offer that our other senses might not. I’ll start by making some connections between two main rationales for Oliveros’ and Schafer’s attention to sound.
1. Sound was the medium of their musical practice as composers (still is).
2. They felt that our soundscapes were changing; both disappearing and getting too loud (still are?)
I then want to explore the suggestion that we, along with our institutions, have become ocularcentric: The idea that sight is atop a Western imposed hierarchy of senses.

We generally think about dance as being something you go and see, but iele paloumpis and their collaborators have developed an approach to audio description for dance that goes way beyond the verbal version of the visual that is traditional for AD for live performance. 

This piece interrogates how a holistic approach to AD can transform the audience experience for everyone, and how access can be artform in and of itself.
