The DiN label via its founder Ian Boddy has its roots in the analogue electronica of the German Berlin School. However over the course of 100+ albums the music released on this UK based imprint have pushed far beyond this musical heritage. The electronic music scene is ever evolving and a new, younger generation of musicians involved in the burgeoning modular synth scene are untethered from the past and able to wander freely into unexplored worlds of sonic soundscaping.

Just such a musician is Polypores (aka Stephen James Buckley) who paints music with a Eurorack modular, drawing influences from ambient, new age, and experimental electronica. His music soars, bubbles, crackles, and soothes, in ever-shifting, immersive cosmic landscapes.

His musical output is both varied and prolific with sold-out vinyl releases on such well respected labels as Behind The Sky, Castles In Space and Polytechnic Youth. Notable live festival performances have included the Castles In Space Levitation event, Manchester’s Subliminal Impulse and the prestigious Future Yard in Liverpool.

Whilst Polypores did have a track on the fifth volume of the Tone Science series, Hyperincandescent (DiN71) is his solo debut on the DiN label. Releasing on both CD and Vinyl the music is split between two album length tracks that meander between different sections exploring a micro world of texture and form. At times calm and blissful the mood can suddenly be transformed into something more chaotic with strange, organic twisted shapes emerging from the undergrowth. His ability to play with tempo as a mouldable musical expression is at times breathtaking and highlights quite what a fearless sonic explorer he is.

DiN is very proud to showcase the talents of this quite unique artist as the label forges ahead into its third decade.

In sound work for films and so on, recording a "room tone" is where you record the space where the action is going to happen, but while nothing is happening. I don't have any personal experience in that world, but I feel like I'm forever interested in music where not much is happening, so 'Room Tones' made me laugh - a collection of recordings that are barely there but still serve a point? I mean, I'm not Steve Roden or anything, but the name clicked. I'm usually looking for double-meanings in an album name and it hardly needs to be said at this point that any music made in the last few years is probably in some way about being tucked away indoors. So tones made in rooms, made for rooms? Sure. 



When I was writing about my last album on Shimmering Moods, 'Recording', I compared music-making to a diary. Two and a half years later, I still really strongly feel that same sense. I don't write with a project or release in mind, usually - if anything I've been working hard on not being too bound by what I've already done - but it still all comes from me and I typically select things for coherence. That seems like something I expect from a diary. Perhaps where the metaphor falls down is that a diary is chronological, while with 'Room Tones' I'm pulling together finished bits and pieces I feel work together. It was 2007 when I made the recording that gives 'Ōokayama Cats At Night' its name, sitting on the back porch of my apartment, waiting for the washing to finish. In contrast, I made 'Tonal Drift' as soon as I recorded the korimako that showed up to make some noise in the garden at my current place. And while most of this music was completed around the same time, one track is maybe five years older than the others.

This quote from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe sums up the lamenting, primal work that is "All That We See or Seem"; a project conceived between Finland, England and Brazil. The self-titled album consists of two long-form pieces of droning mysticism hailing from the trio of Gruth (concept, production, electronics), Ellen Southern (vocals, field recordings, percussion) and Johanna Puuperä (violin, modular synthesizer, additional vocals).

Also known as one third of the ambient super band Hotel Neon, Andrew has been putting out sublime drones on the likes of Fluid Audio, Home Normal, Archives and Polar Seas. On Maui, found sounds recorded on the island are paired with lush drones that induce a state of dream-like calm. Maui has been beautifully mastered by Tobias Hellkvist.

Ian Boddy has been at the forefront of the UK electronic music scene since 1983 when he both performed at the very first UK Electronica Festival in Milton Keynes and released his first vinyl album The Climb.

In the 4 years preceding this event he had been experimenting at an Arts Council funded studio in Newcastle whilst at University. His early work resulted in 3 cassette only releases on the Mirage label as well as several local concerts. These early tapes showed Boddy gradually forming his own style through a long self teaching process in the techniques of analogue synthesis and tape manipulation.

After the success of 1983 he went on to release another 2 vinyl albums, Spirits and Phoenix, as well as performing several concerts throughout the UK. However it wasn't until 1989 that his first CD release, Odyssey, came out on the EM label Surreal to Real. After Drive, his second release on the Surreal label Boddy formed his own record label, Something Else Records , through which he released a further 4 solo albums as well as reissuing his 3 early vinyl albums and the cassette only release Jade on CD. Furthermore he released three collaborative CD releases with some of Europes finest exponents of EM, namely Andy Pickford, Ron Boots and Mark Shreeve.

He continued to expand his concert appearences which have now surpassed over 100 events with concerts in the UK ( including several more UK Electronica appearances, two shows at the Jodrell Bank Planetarium & two at the National Space Centre), Holland ( five festival appearances ), Germany and three shows in Philadelphia, USA.

Alongside these mainstream EM activities Boddy has also built for himself a formidable reputuation as a sound designer having produced a series of sample CD's & virtual instruments for sampling specialists Time & Space. In late 2008 Boddy set up his own downloadable sample CD company with the Waveforms series of sample packs. Furthermore he is also involved in library music having composed 11 such CD's for the publishing company deWolfe as well as producing some music for a computer games company.

Thus we come up to the present with the formation of his DiN label in 1999. Unlike his private Something Else Records the DiN label was set up to allow Boddy to actively form different collaborations with a wide variety of musicians as well as release other artists music. DiN has achieved widespread critical acclaim for it's adventurous outlook at the world of EM and has seen 39 releases with Boddy being involved in 21 of these ( five solo and sixteen collaborative projects ). 

In 2008 DiN expanded it's catalogue with a series of download only releases featuring Boddy in concert both as a solo performer and with other DiN artists.
