Satellite Smile

This tune stems from the first ever cobbling together of notes my grubby little mitts could muster many moons ago. Left in the doldrums of my gourd for some considerable time, it fell out, almost fully formed, just over a year ago. Since that time, I've been collaborating on an antipodean level with one Johnny Brennan to fine tune the drums. 
It could/should have been finished some time ago, but with my lack of inertia, and Mr B not embracing the wonders of communication technology, it took us a wee while to cross the finishing line.

This one is an exception: I made English lyrics. I made it on the occasion of the 2009 ACBS convention (ACBS is a psychotherapy approach) and performed it on the follies-night. 

It is about a character that can spoil things like perfect parties. You as host have the choice to be bothered by him or not notice him too much and have a good time anyway.

This is collaboration with Hannah Duncan, http://soundcloud.com/hanjan. I wrote the bare bones of the song and Hannah created the rest, the harmonies, counter melody and orchestration. I don't think I would have recorded this on my own, as it lends so much to Drake, but Hannah lent her unique voice to it, making it much more of a  joint effort, and something very different from how I would have driven it.

'Riverbed symbolises the ancient, worn, life bringing veins of the landscape. The song is an idea of a conversation, a journey with them. Something much bigger in significance and longevity than us. Its about floating, finding,and understanding our place.'

(Obvious influence here is Nick Drake's 'Riverman'. I use 3/4 rather than his 5/4. Otherwise, yeah.)

This is one of those eerie autumnal numbers that seem to float around my head at this time of year. I imagine an Atkinson Grimshaw painting  when listening to parts of this. I suppose its another song about fighting those little demons that trouble us.
